Several tech companies in the United States are abuzz with the news that Google is poised to make a significant announcement relating to the availability of its Google Assistant on Apple devices. The reports indicate that Google may be planning to unveil this exciting development during the course of the week, amidst the flurry of announcements, keynotes, and workshops that typically accompany Google’s much-anticipated annual I/O Developers’ Conference.
Previously, in February, Google had made an announcement that shook up the tech world: Google’s Assistant would be making its debut on non-Google devices. The factors prompting this shift remain unclear. The conjectures linking Samsung’s decision to introduce its Bixby assistant to the Samsung Galaxy S8 to Google’s decision to “open up” can only be verified by Google’s direct comment. Regardless of the reasons, with Apple opening Siri to developers, Google does not seem to want to lag behind in creating wider opportunities for developers.
Last month, Google took a major step towards making this a reality by making the Google Assistant’s Software Development Kit (SDK) accessible to developers. The purported inclusion of iOS into the mix only broadens the horizons for developers, offering them an even more substantial range of applications in which they can integrate the Google Assistant.
While we can surmise these developments with a degree of confidence, there is still a level of uncertainty as to whether the launch will be limited to the US market or extend globally. However, it’s safe to speculate that a global roll-out is likely.
For the uninitiated, Google Assistant is Google’s answer to Apple’s Siri — a voice-activated digital assistant designed to make our lives easier. If you are an iOS user who has not had the opportunity to experience Google Assistant, simply download Google’s messaging app, Allo, and explore its functionality. Imagine the potential of a Siri-like experience integrated into a broader range of your favorite apps on your iPhone or iPad. Given that iOS is the world’s second largest mobile operating system, this development could be a significant win, attracting a plethora of developers keen to tap into its potential.
