Google Bets Big on AI with Gemini Launch

Bard will simply be known as Gemini going forward

Google made a bold statement about the future of its business this week, announcing that its AI assistant Gemini will now be central to its products and strategy going forward. This move signals Google shifting from a search-centric company to an AI-first organization.

Unveiled as Bard in 2022 and rebranded as Gemini Google’s AI chatbot represents its massive investment into large language models over the past few years. Powered by Gemini Ultra, the latest and most advanced version of Google’s language system, Gemini aims to be conversational, contextual, and assist users with a wide range of tasks.

“I think Gemini is a super important first step towards building a true AI assistant,” said Sissie Hsiao, Vice President of Search at Google. “One that goes beyond search to help users get things done through natural conversations.”

Omnipresent Gemini Assistant and Apps

While Google Assistant has been the company’s digital helper for some years, Gemini now appears positioned to take its place. Google launched dedicated Gemini apps for Android allowing users to set it as the default voice assistant, replacing Google Assistant entirely for many core functions.

Though there is no iOS app yet, Gemini will be integrated into the main Google app on iPhone. Strikingly, Google added a toggle to easily switch between traditional Google Search and Gemini – the first-time search has not been the undisputed gateway to all things Google.

Powering both Consumer and Enterprise AI

Beyond consumer uses, Gemini will also be leveraged to enhance Google Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs and Sheets. Previously called Duet AI, these features can automatically generate emails, analyse data in spreadsheets or optimize documents. Now bundled under the Gemini brand, Google aims to power enterprise AI tasks for workers through its productivity suite.

“Gemini represents decades of Google research coming together in one product that can handle everything from complex workflows to creative tasks,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, Google Senior Vice President. “It shows the power of our investments in large language models and AI for both consumers and businesses.”

Taking on AI Leaders with Gemini Ultra Subscription

Access to Gemini Ultra does come at a price – $20 per month. As part of Google One Premium AI, users get the full Gemini assistant, 2TB of Drive storage along with other membership perks. This positions Gemini as a premium offering compared to ChatGPT and other rivals.

Early benchmarks show Gemini Ultra edging out competitors on certain language tasks. However with rapid innovation in the AI space from startups like Anthropic and public models like GPT-4, Google faces intense competition. Their goal is proving Gemini’s conversational abilities and speed at scale.

“Yes, we were later to market than some,” Hsiao admitted. “But Google has leading natural language understanding and now with Gemini Ultra powering our products, I’m confident users will be amazed at what we can deliver.”

The Search Company is Now an AI Company

Silicon Valley pundits see this move as Google going “all-in” on AI. Cloud chief Thomas Kurian said they plan to infuse AI into all their products. It seems Search, Google’s crown jewel for over 20 years, may need to share the spotlight with Gemini going forward.

Can Gemini establish Google as leader in the AI age? Much like Google Plus’ flop last decade, this remains high-stakes gamble by the search pioneer. But make no mistake – Google is now betting its future on artificial intelligence through this ambitious Gemini launch. The company that defined search aims to redefine AI.
