Google Brings AirDrop-Like Sharing to Every Android Device

When Google and Apple integrated the venerable AirDrop mechanism with Pixel’s Quick Share last year, they broke down some rather significant barriers. This significant modification created a previously unattainable communication route by enabling Google Pixel phones to transfer files to Apple iPhones and vice versa.

Unfortunately, only phones from the Pixel 10 series could do this. Google has officially confirmed that other Android devices, regardless of the brands, will soon be able to send files to iPhones via AirDrop, but they never intended for that to be the case.

The expansion of AirDrop-style compatibility beyond the Pixel 10 series to the larger Android environment in 2026 is a good move, and this has been formally announced by Google. This feature will enable smooth file transfers between platforms without the need for third-party app dependencies by enabling direct communication between Apple’s AirDrop and Android’s native Quick Share.

For a long time, Android was unable to compete with AirDrop, which has always been an integral component of the iPhone. That changed with the launch of Quick Share, but few of us ever thought Quick Share and AirDrop would eventually operate together.

It was in November 2025 that the rest of us ordinary mortals have been waiting to see if that compatibility would extend to other Android devices; however, it’s just for Pixel 10 devices.

Google has finally confirmed that all Android devices will be able to use AirDrop. Android Vice President of Engineering Eric Kay stated that the company’s goal was to release an upgrade this year during a press briefing that was attended by the Android Authority. The day and month for the release were not disclosed.

Kay went further to state that they are putting a lot of time and effort into making sure they can create something that works with devices like MacBooks, iPads, and iPhones. He further went on to say that they are collaborating with their partners to extend it throughout the ecosystem now that they have demonstrated its viability, and there will be some interesting announcements soon in the coming days.

From the beginning, there were indications that Google’s intentions were for this to spread throughout Android. Code sleuths saw right away that Google had integrated the interoperability into its own app, complete with a Play Store listing, rather than tying it to anything that would restrict it or make it Pixel-only.

The writing has been on the wall for a while, especially when users consider that Qualcomm and Nothing have both individually stated that they have been working on getting this exact capability to operate on their hardware.

Google is integrating it as a fundamental Android feature, utilising reliable, memory-safe protocols like Rust to guarantee security and dependability, so this is not a stopgap solution.

Due to Google’s present implementation’s inability to access Apple’s private contact-based sharing, Apple devices must have their AirDrop visibility set to “Everyone for 10 minutes” in order to transmit files.

However, “when” rather than “whether” has long been the question. Even though we don’t yet have any set dates, the word “soon” excites us.

“Very soon” is when official announcements about the distribution of particular devices are anticipated. According to industry experts, these announcements may take place during Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event or Mobile World Congress (MWC).

However, our fingers are crossed on when this announcement will be made.
