Google+ Adds ‘Collections’ Feature to iOS, Offering Pinterest-Like Curation Capabilities

Google+ has introduced its ‘Collections’ feature to its iOS app, enabling a personalized, Pinterest-inspired user experience. The Collections feature empowers users to accumulate their favorite photos, videos, and posts centered around a topic of their preference.

In a similar vein to Pinterest, created collections can either be shared with the public or kept private, all at the user’s discretion. A highly-demanded function, based on user feedback, is the ability to search through Collections. This search feature is now live on the Android app.

For those who actively utilize this functionality, the addition of ‘Collection tags’ is another update soon to be seen. These can further facilitate the customization and categorization of collections on the platform.

Social media platforms often analyze the features of their competitors to see what can be adapted and optimized for their own users. This is evident in ‘trending’ and ‘hashtag’ features that originated from Twitter but have been respectively embraced by Facebook. Equally, Facebook’s News Feed style has been a defining aspect of the social media landscape.

Pinterest, however, seems unperturbed by this ongoing feature transference. It continues to innovate, launching a service it has labelled ‘Buyable Pins’. Aligning with how Pinterest functions, users ‘pin’ items they love to their dashboard. Mega-retailers have partnered with Pinterest to allow users to directly purchase some of these pinned items.

Google+’s Collection features promises a rejuvenated experience for its user base, aligning with current trends, offering personalized curation, and enhancing interactions on the platform.
