Google Drive Backup & Sync Is Set To Retire By The Dawn Of October

Google announcements reveal its Back and Sync will be retiring towards the end of this year. The Search Giant will deploy a transition scheme next week — a unified backup system whereby Google is integrating Backup and Sync with Drive.

For instance, Google users who sync consumer files with Backup and Sync desktop services are expected to transfer their documents to Google Drive for Desktop. This transition depicts Google’s unified system for backing up consumers’ files while Drive also capable of syncing your documents and device.

It worth noting that both corporate clients and consumers can now use Drive for all backup and syncing purposes. Transition to backup and sync with Drive by default will be available next week — enough time for users to make the switch before the last day of September.

According to Google, Backup and Sync will shut down by October 1st (the same day Nigeria celebrates her independence). The Search Giant encourages its default Backup and syncing users to start switching to backup these files on Drive — Drive is expected to function as Sync via desktop).  “July 19th, 2021: Backup and Sync will support a guided flow to help users transition on to Drive for desktop.”

For contrast, consumers’ files that remain on Backup and Sync till October 1st will be locked out of access to their documents, while Drive remains the sole backup service by Google for desktop users. “ By August 18th, 2021: Any users still on Backup and Sync will start to receive in-product notifications prompting them to transition to Drive for desktop,” Google said.

“October 1st, 2021: Any users still on Backup and Sync after that point will no longer be able to sign in to Backup and Sync. To continue syncing with Drive and/or Google Photos, users will need to transition to Drive for desktop,” in line with the Search Giant announcements.

Still on the matter of Google’s unified backup system, it worth noting that Drive File Stream that serves the same purpose as Backup and Sync will not be shut down alongside Backup and Sync. Despite Drive File Streams is mostly used by business clients — it’s also compatible with the custom Drive.

The Search Giant aims at unifying its syncing and backup systems whereby it also appears to be a reversal of the initial split of Google Drive on the desktop into two autonomous Sync services.

Google’s blog post confirmed this transition of syncing services — users should worry less about a complex UI since the new backup platform is an integration of two similar Sync service products. Remember, Google Drive solely a cloud backup system whereby images and videos are stored accordingly.

Now,  Drive can operate as a cloud-based backup system and Sync background files to keep track of your latest files. Drive can also sync external storage devices such as Flash drives — on your computer File Explorer, Drive can also create a mirror file of your local file and Google Drive.

Since Google Photo now has its autonomous backup network, saving images and videos on Drive pops up a default option of either saving your media file on Drive or Photo. Note that July 19th commences the transition of backup and syncing services to Google Drive.
