Google Is Integrating Features Of Google Meet Into Duo Meet App

Google stated in June that it was integrating Meet’s features into the Duo app, and that process officially kicked in today. Very soon, the Duo app will incorporate the functionalities of Meets. Technically, neither service is being discontinued by Google; instead, Duo is being rebranded as Meet and will retain all of the functionality of both applications, while Meet remains Meet.

Although this process does sound a bit complex, at the end of it, there will only be two applications left: “Meet Original,” which is the current Meet app that will gradually be phased away, and the new Meet, which merges Meet and Duo. You may hold meetings and hold group and individual calls using the integrated app.

There is nothing you need to do if Duo is already installed. The Meet features were added to the Duo upgrade that Google released a month ago, and today Google is releasing an update for iOS and Android that will replace the Duo logo with the Meet icon. The new Meet + Duo combination will be available to everyone who uses the Google Meet app by September. Google warns that over the coming months, duo.google.com will redirect to meet.google.com/calling.

If you currently utilize Meet, there is nothing you need to do in order to continue doing so without receiving any benefits from Duo. Keep in mind that Google might soon stop supporting the original Meet if you want to keep using the app as-is. Although it doesn’t indicate when Google says it will let original Meet users know when they “should move to the new app experience.”

Google’s web of messaging apps just became a little more complicated thanks to this shift, but it also shows that the company is interested in integrating its existing services rather than just introducing new ones. Google stated earlier this year that Hangouts would be discontinued in November in favour of Google Chat. Google also stopped providing third-party support for Google Talk (also known as GChat) last month.
