In an effort to provide more connective resources for its users, Google Maps has subtly integrated a new feature that allows real-time location sharing with friends and other contacts. This means you can now keep your inner circle informed of your exact whereabouts at any given moment, as well as any adjustments to your day’s itinerary.
Building on the foundation laid by their Trusted Contacts app, launched the previous year, Google continues to prioritize user safety and connectivity. The Trusted Contacts app was designed to allow users to share updates with friends and family, proving invaluable when locating a user who has, for example, lost their way. By sharing the user’s live location and even providing traceable information from telecommunication masts, a lost individual can be promptly located.
With this new update, privacy concerns have predictably been raised. The issue underscores the potential risk of such personal real-time information falling into malicious hands, however, it can be argued that the benefits may outweigh these concerns. With an increase in real-time tracking, we can more readily locate our loved ones, thus earning peace of mind.
Interestingly, Google had already explored this territory in 2009 with Latitude. Latitude was a feature designed to share the user’s location with friends and keep track of their friends’ location if desired. It was a remarkable initiative for its time, allowing status updates, integration with Google Talk, and even inter-app communication.
This technology has always existed but perhaps the world was not as interconnected as it is today, and potential privacy issues were at the time less of a concern. However, with the increase in digital threats and security challenges worldwide, companies like Google are continuously innovating and enhancing security measures.
Indeed, times have changed since 2009. With escalating security crises such as kidnappings in Nigeria and a broad range of missing person cases worldwide, these evolving tools from tech juggernauts like Google may potentially become a ray of hope in addressing such problems.
