Google News Unveils Updated Desktop Interface for Enhanced User Experience and Fake News Identification

Google News on desktop has undergone a transformative redesign, as revealed in a recent blog post from the tech giant. The updated interface now features a sidebar that allows users to choose from a list of ‘Story Cards’. These provide an avenue for readers to explore multiple perspectives on a single news story, fostering a more balanced understanding of the issues at hand. This new feature is a response to the growth and proliferation of one-sided ‘fake news’ stories that have increasingly infected the news landscape.

The incorporated “Story Cards” are designed to help users gain a different lens to view a particular issue or story. Each story card presents related articles that can offer various angles and perspectives to one news story. This innovative approach seeks to combat the plague of fake news that is a growing concern globally.

The updated Google News interface also introduces a novel tab bar that includes local news and personalised topics selected based on users’ web interests. This customization provides a more tailored news experience for each individual, allowing them to stay informed about the issues they care about the most.

Joining the fight against fake news, the new interface also incorporates a Fact Check tool, enhancing the reliability of the news being consumed. Initially available to US users, this tool in the sidebar will list recently fact-checked articles. The tool is a clear response to criticisms faced by tech giants, including Google and Facebook, about their perceived inaction against the spread of fake news. Both companies have since pledged to introduce measures that help combat this trend online.

On the multimedia front, Google mentions incremental improvements in its algorithm for selecting top videos, promising an enhanced real-time video watching experience. The revamped inbuilt video player now displays related videos within the player itself, offering a continuous flow of relevant video content for users.

The main highlight that Google aims to convey from this redesign is the increased ability for users to customize their news experience. With a focus on personalizing and tailoring the platform to users’ preferences, Google aims to transform news consumption into a more interactive and engaging activity.

Google has announced that the new design will be available to all users in the near future. The business is arming users with the ability to update settings, name custom sections, edit existing ones, and specify interests to modify the ‘For You’ stream. Users can also identify news sources they want to see more, or less, of. This variety of customization options allows users a great degree of control over the content they see, marking a significant step forward in personalized news consumption.

Going forward, Google’s vision for its News platform revolves around user-centric design and the battle against fake news. The search giant is continuously working towards creating a trusted, personalized news source for users around the world.

Exciting days are ahead for all Google News users, as these anticipated features promise an evolved, personalized, and more reliable news engagement experience.
