Google is preparing a significant app “upgrade” for Now Playing, one of the Pixel’s oldest features. The Now Playing function on Google would be moved from a background service to a stand-alone app that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
This update, which is currently a part of the Android System Intelligence app, attempts to give Pixel owners more frequent updates and greater functionality.
Currently, Android System Intelligence, which is also in charge of Live Caption, Smart Text Selection, and other functions, powers the background song detection feature. With its two-tab structure for Favourites and History, the UI is fairly outdated.
Soon, Now Playing will turn into a “dedicated app”. This “upgrade” is described in strings in Android System Intelligence version B.21.
Things to note about the upcoming app, as it tends to feature the following:
- Centralised Features: Song history, favourites, and settings will all be kept in one place in the new app.
- New Features: Song history syncing between several compatible devices may be possible with a stand-alone app.
- Visual Update: A new dedicated icon and package name identified as com.google.android.apps.pixel.nowplaying are indicated by leaked code.
Google has not confirmed the release timeline and date, however, the app is expected to launch as early as March 2026 alongside a Pixel Feature Drop.
The installation process will take you to the Play Store. Because the stub is already present on Pixel smartphones, we are aware of the new icon’s appearance. The app will be available at com.google.android.apps.pixel.nowplaying.
With this strategy, Google should be able to add more capabilities to Now Playing, similar to how Weather was made a Pixel app. A contemporary look would be very beneficial, and we urgently need the Now Playing history to be synchronised across devices.
Also, Google confirmed that the upcoming Feature Drop in March would be a suitable time for this to deploy.
At present, the “Now Playing” feature is a feature which is compatible on Pixel phones, where users can continue to use the integrated version until the separate app is released. Its automatic identification uses an on-device database; it can identify nearby music without an online connection.
Also, the ‘Now Playing’ option is an optional option to retrieve album artwork and search Google for songs that aren’t in the local database. While the default music player option when accessing selected music from their history, users have the option of selecting which provider (such as Spotify or YouTube Music) to utilise.
