Google shuts down YouTube Vanced, a popular ad-blocking Android app | Ars Technica

Vanced a popular YouTube app for Android has announced plans of retiring after receiving a legal threat from search giant Google. The creators of Vanced have now revealed that the project will discontinue in the coming days, with all download links set to be removed. Although the creators have informed that the app will continue to function for anyone who currently has it installed on Android for now but it may stop working at any moment from now, all plans for future updates have been immediately ruled out. The creators have said the Vanced projects are shutting down “due to legal reasons.”

Vanced received a cease and desist letter recently from Google. In a Discord message by a Vanced representative, who disclosed that “We were asked to remove all references to ‘YouTube’, change the logo, and remove all links related to YouTube products.” As a result, the project is forced to stop distribution and development immediately.

The popular third-party YouTube app for Android was created in 2017, the app particularly allowed YouTube users to put a block on all YouTube video ads without a Premium subscription. The app provided a decompiled Google’s official YouTube app and also added additional features which include a true black theme, and customizations not offered in the official YouTube for Android app.

Google has begun a series of legal actions against third-party apps that grant unwarranted access to YouTube and Vanced happens to be its latest causality. Last year Google-owned YouTube forced two popular Discord music bots to go offline, before starting to test ad-supported YouTube integration into Discord a number of weeks later. The popular Rythm and Groovy Discord music bots also decompiled Google’s services by allowing Discord users to listen to music together avoiding ads.

A message by creators of was spotted on Telegram read that “Vanced has been discontinued, we know this is not something you wanted to hear, but it’s something we need to do.” Google is yet to give an update on its side of the story.
