Google to Use AI for Age Verification

In order to ascertain whether a user is younger than eighteen, Google announced that it will start testing an age estimation model driven by machine learning. Every Google product, including YouTube, will take advantage of the automated capability.

The internet giant’s decision to use algorithms to determine age comes as policymakers are putting pressure on online companies to improve their child safety features.

The AI-based age estimation capability will be released by Google later this year.

Google intends to begin evaluating artificial intelligence in order to ascertain whether customers are of legal age to utilize its products. The new AI system will give young users “more age-appropriate experiences,” according to the company’s blog post about “new digital protections for kids, teens, and parents.”

Google announced that it will start evaluating an age estimation algorithm driven by machine learning to help identify users who are younger than 18.

The concept, which is anticipated to arrive later this year, aims to give young users “more age-appropriate experiences. It will begin in the United States and spread to other nations.

According to Google, the estimating model will utilize machine learning to interpret a variety of data points that are already connected to a user’s account, including the kind of videos they have viewed, the subjects of their searches, and the duration of their account. These signals can improve the model’s ability to identify potential age fraud.

The user can offer age verification in the form of an identity card issued by the credit card or a selfie if the model mistakenly identifies an account as being under the age of 18. Google stated that it is also investigating alternative methods for confirming an individual’s age.

Other organizations, including Meta, and a number of markets, including Europe, have already adopted this strategy.

The machine learning tool was mentioned by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan in the company’s 2025 priorities, which also stated that the company intends to “responsibly harness the power of AI to enhance the YouTube experience for everyone.” The company is also implementing a few safeguards for underage accounts, including limiting sensitive ads and other potentially inappropriate content on YouTube and filtering or blurring explicit search results.

Underage accounts will be subject to Google’s current safety tools, such as the SafeSearch filter, which helps filter out explicit information from search results. Additionally, YouTube videos that might not be suitable for viewers younger than 18 will be restricted. In “more countries over time,” Google intends to introduce its age estimation technology.

Additionally, the business is implementing a few measures to protect accounts belonging to minors, like filtering or obscuring explicit search results and limiting sensitive advertisements and other potentially inappropriate YouTube content.

For Android smartphones and tablets, a new feature known as School Time will help parents monitor or limit app use during school hours. Future updates will also allow parents to more easily monitor their children’s online activities on both Android and Chrome devices through Google Family Link, and Android phones will be able to “tap to make payments” with parental permission.
