Google TV, which debuted at CES earlier this month, has announced that it will begin rolling out an experimental feature called “News Briefs,” which is powered by Gemini. This News Brief feature will show Gemini-powered AI-generated summaries of the day’s biggest news headlines.

The “News Briefs” is a feature aimed to compile key news stories throughout the day. News Briefs uses Gemini models and human evaluation to provide overviews of the latest news stories and links to relevant YouTube videos from reliable news sources so you may learn more. Google TV uses Gemini to compile a summary of the narrative as well as video sources related to the issue, primarily from YouTube. Briefs are updated with major stories throughout the day, making it easy to stay up to current on the newest news.

Google started testing a new artificial intelligence (AI) function for Google TV on Wednesday. The new feature, called News Brief, uses Gemini to summarize and show the day’s key news headlines for consumers. The feature was initially shown at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 earlier this month. Other AI functions, such as conversational searches and AI-generated screensavers, will be added to the company’s smart TV operating system shortly. During the trial phase, only a limited few users will have access to News Brief.

In a support page, a Google Community Manager disclosed the expansion of the previously announced AI feature. According to the post, the Google TV feature will soon become available to some customers in the United States. Select users will notice a new listing on their For You page called News Brief.

News Brief simply analyses the major news stories throughout the day and creates narrated summaries for customers to quickly view. The news briefs will be followed by related YouTube videos about the subject. Google stated that it will only show videos from “trusted news sources,” but made no reference to any newspaper or channel names.

The Mountain View-based tech giant highlighted News Brief as an experimental feature, stating that these news summaries were generated using Gemini algorithms and subjected to human inspection. No specific model names were revealed. Notably, the News Briefs will be updated throughout the day.

While Google does not specify how it planned to source information for these news items, it is assumed that the content will be derived from YouTube videos. The business also did not specify whether the news pieces would be tailored to users based on their content watching history or Google Search activity.

The business has also provided a means for Google TV customers to leave comments on the function. In case they discover any bugs, faults, or other problems. To achieve this, customers should hit the Google Assistant or microphone button on their remote and say “Send feedback.” Following that, customers can submit comments using the on-screen instructions. Notably, Google TV allows viewers to utilize their smartphones as a keyboard to provide comments.

This function is not yet generally available, but Google will begin rolling it out to “some” Google TV users in the United States this week. “News Briefs” will display on Google TV’s “For You” screen.
