Google’s AI Overviews Are Getting Ads

According to reports, Google has started displaying advertisements on AI Overviews, the company’s Gemini-powered artificial intelligence (AI) search platform. The function, which was introduced earlier this year in the US, was formerly known as Search Generative Experience (SGE). It was extended to six other nations, including India, in August. A rumour claims that the IT giant has begun to show relevant adverts at the bottom of the interface. At present, the advertisements are exhibited to a subset of users; however, it is probable that they will eventually appear on all AI Overviews.

Vice President of Google Ads Shashi Thakur stated, “This new ad format was designed to help people discover new brands and make informed purchasing decisions.” He called it the advertising of the future in an AI-powered world. The “Sponsored” mark will be visible and understandable in the advertisements, he continued.

According to The Verge, the tech behemoth with headquarters in Mountain View has started running ads in the AI Overviews. The corporation has been testing advertisements since May, so the decision is hardly shocking. It seems that the business has made decisions on the positioning and type of advertisements.

The business said in May that it would begin testing advertisements in these search summaries, known as AI Overviews, and it is now making the function available to US users of the Google mobile app. “We’re thrilled to announce that Ads in AI Overviews are now available for mobile users in the US, following several months of meticulous testing,” Shashi said.

The newspaper claims that these advertisements are based on the question that was searched. This implies that when a user looks for the best ballpoint pen, an AI-powered search results page will display a list of things to take into account before making a pen purchase. Underneath it, viewers will now notice a “sponsored” area wherein related pens with a clickable buy link may show up.

These advertisements don’t seem to be inserted carelessly, though. The Verge was informed by Google representative Craig Ewer that advertisements on AI Overviews will only appear when a query has a “commercial angle.” This probably indicates that no sponsored goods will be displayed in an academic question.

A primary motivation for the introduction of the advertisements in AI Overviews is reportedly Google’s conviction that the function can effectively link pertinent companies, goods, and services with potential customers. However, only US-based smartphone users are now seeing the advertisements. The corporation has not disclosed when similar advertisements would be released in additional areas.

In August, Google updated the summary to include a URL icon at the conclusion of each paragraph. These icons show out the pertinent websites that were mentioned in the text in a prominent way. Furthermore, the specific language that was extracted from the source is also underlined. According to the IT giant, it discovered the ideal placement and format to drive the most traffic to the original website.

Other Updates

The search engine business also revealed in a separate statement that it has been developing a new AI Overviews style that incorporates noticeable connections to related web pages right inside the text. As a result, Google will begin including inline links to the sources that are cited in summaries produced by AI.

According to preliminary tests, these connections drove more visitors to websites than the previous layout with links at the bottom, Rhiannon Bell, vice president of user experience for Google Search, stated at the media briefing.

“We are expanding this experience globally to all countries where AI overviews are available, effective today, based on this positive reception,” VP and Head of Google Search Liz Reid stated.

Google also said that it would start organizing search results into lists of recommendations that are scrollable and customized based on the user’s search query and account history. For the time being, American users of Google’s mobile app will only be able to receive recipe suggestions from the “AI-organized search results.”
