It’s a day of innovation and technological development as Facebook takes another step in enhancing its user experience with the integration of group voice calls on Facebook Messenger. The announcement was gracefully conveyed through a Facebook post by the social media mogul’s vice president of messaging products, David Marcus.
Once you’ve updated to the latest version of Messenger, the group voice call feature will be live and accessible within 24 hours. The waiting period is relatively minimal, providing users with ample time to familiarize themselves with the new characteristics of the platform. Below is an image representation of how your Messenger interface will appear post-update. With a single tap on the designated phone icon, you can easily initiate your group call the next time you’re in conversation within a group.
For the time being, however, the utility of this new Messenger feature is limited strictly to voice calls. Unfortunately, this means that we won’t be seeing regular group video chats akin to those services provided by Google Hangouts and the China-based solution, WeChat, springing up on Facebook Messenger in the immediate future. Nonetheless, as a company known for continual expansion and upgrade, it may only be a matter of time before Facebook Messenger ventures into offering group video call services.
At the moment, Facebook boasts over 900 million users on its emerging Messenger platform with an additional one billion users availing of WhatsApp. While it remains ambiguous whether these updates will be reflected on the WhatsApp platform, any measure of conjecture suggests that it’s a considerable possibility in the near future.
