Breached U.S. Central Command’s Social Media Accounts Restored After Alleged ISIS Hack

The U.S. Central Command’s (CENTCOM) Twitter and YouTube accounts were reportedly breached yesterday, stirring security concerns among the cyber-community. Notably, the hackers claimed to be from ISIS, the notorious terrorist group based in the Middle East, taking responsibility for this cyber assault. A CENTCOM official confirmed the incident in a statement to Gizmodo; “We can confirm that the CENTCOM Twitter and YouTube accounts were compromised earlier today. We are taking the appropriate measures to address the matter.”

In a swift reaction, mere minutes after the breach, the U.S. military suspended both accounts to further secure information. They assured the public that no classified documents were compromised in the breach. It’s worth noting that the act of hacking into CENTCOM’s social media accounts is not synonymous with infiltrating the military’s secure servers, which could lead to catastrophic consequences if compromised.

It’s significant to recall that the U.S. led coalition, under the CENTCOM’s mandate, is actively engaged in a war against ISIS— a group with substantial strongholds in the war torn regions of Iraq and Syria. This assault on the U.S. Central Command’s digital platform might be viewed as another frontier in this ongoing war.

In the wake of this digital skirmish, we’ve gathered images detailing the aftermath of the attack. You can see these images for yourself;
