Facebook Reveals High-Tech Hardware Lab: Area 404

Last Thursday, Social media juggernaut, Facebook, revealed its latest innovation, a futuristic hardware lab. Known as Area 404, this 22,000 square-feet haven of technology and advancement can be found nestled in the heart of Menlo Park, California. To assuage your curiosity, the ‘hardware’ in question does not pertain to smartphones, but rather, Facebook’s ambitious ten-year plan. Their goal includes the construction of more advanced machines and systems to foster global connectivity. This has been seen recently with the successful test flight of Aquila, Facebook’s solar-powered drone designed to provide internet services.

The lab’s name, Area 404, has been inspired by the ‘404 error’ – a message received when attempting to access a web page that cannot be found. This amusing homage refers to Facebook engineers’ previously unfulfilled desire for a dedicated workspace – a space “that couldn’t be found until now”. Given the recent revelation, it’s safe to say that any potential connection to the fabled Area 51 in Nevada, renowned for its alien-related theories, is purely speculative fun.

Facebook described Area 404 as a “new 22,000-square-foot lab outfitted with state-of-the-art machine tools and test equipment.” This new space allows for efficient in-house modeling, prototyping, and failure analysis, effectively reducing the development cycle from weeks to a mere few days. The lab has been carefully designed to accommodate all teams, housing more than 50 workbenches in the main area. Departments such as the Connectivity Lab, Oculus, Building 8, and Infrastructure teams can now collaborate in a shared space, learning from each other as they create.

Area 404 won’t be Facebook’s first venture into the hardware territory. The tech giant had previously acquired virtual reality company, Oculus, two years prior, for a staggering $2 billion. Facebook also maintains a drone team in Somerset, England, which had successfully tested a drone last year. Manifesting an evolution beyond a mere online friends’ connection platform, Facebook has evolved into a formidable tech giant, mounting a challenge for established names like Microsoft and Google. Boasting the rank of fifth biggest company in the US, its declared revenue was a massive $6.44 billion in the second quarter of the same year. Moreover, Facebook has invested heavily in research, spending an impressive $4.8 billion last year, thereby doubling its expenditure from the previous year.

Facebook’s Area 404 mirrors a similar initiative by Google – the so-called ‘X lab’. This secret research facility has been responsible for innovative projects such as the self-driving cars.
