A Helpful Guide: How to Filter Unpleasant Memories from Your Facebook “On This Day” Feature

Ever stumbled down memory lane while browsing Facebook, only to have those fond remembrances interrupted by a less pleasant recall? You’re not alone. Facebook’s “On This Day” feature, which brings up old posts from your history with the social media platform, can sometimes bring back memories we’d rather forget along with those we’d love to remember. Fortunately, there is a solution: Facebook has now provided users with an option to block specific memories.

Designed to provide users a nostalgic walk down memory lane, “On This Day” feature throws a spotlight on past posts, photographs, and life events that have shaped your Facebook journey. From your most-liked posts, major life events, flashback photos to becoming friends with someone on Facebook – everything that has a significant memory associated with it gains renewed visibility. However, not every memory holds a pleasant essence. Life events like break-ups, accidents, or even the death of a loved one can be unexpectedly painful when they resurface.

To help alleviate this potential discomfort, Facebook now permits its users to filter out certain memories from appearing in their “On This Day” feature. To access this feature, you have to visit the “On This Day” page which can be easily found on your Facebook feed.

Once you’re on the “On This Day” page, spot the “Preferences” option located in the upper right corner of your screen. Clicking on this will trigger a pop-up notification. This pop-up contains a heartfelt affirmation from Facebook – “Your memories are yours, so you should control which ones you see in ‘On This Day'”.

From here, you are granted the powers to filter and control the content that appears on your “On This Day” feature. Whether it’s a specific date that evokes painful memories or certain people you would rather not be reminded of, Facebook gives you the power to discretely filter them out.

Facebook’s “On This Day” feature was first introduced in March 2015. While initially criticized for reveiving old wounds by not offering users control over which past events were highlighted, the update now allows a more personalised and mindful reminiscing experience.

So as we gear up for the holiday season, here’s to hoping that you’ll now be able to enjoy all its cheer sans any unwelcome ghosts from the past.

With these changes, Facebook continues its mission to enhance its user’s experience, making browsing as joyous and personalized as possible, while simultaneously ensuring that it doesn’t inadvertently prick emotional sensitivities.
