In direct competition with Google, Apple brings its Maps to the web for Find my iPhone

Apple seems to be either testing or rolling out a change, as some users purport to still see Google Maps. Presently, Apple Maps can be accessed on the iCloud.com’s beta site and a few users have noticed it on the main iCloud.com site.

Approximately two years after substitifying Google Maps with its own version on iOS 6, Apple has developed its Maps offering for the web, implementing it with the Find My iPhone web application.

From iOS 6 onwards, Apple has leveraged its own Maps, backed by different partners’ data for the Find My iPhone app on its iOS devices and other apps on its mobile gadgets. This new advancement eliminates Google Maps from one of its last remaining products, namely the Find My iPhone web app found at iCloud.com.

Apple is now noticeably using “Data from TomTom, others”, and linking to a comprehensive list of data partners. This alteration comes with a few user interface adjustments, evident from the comparison below:

In September of the previous year, Apple’s Maps team listed a job opening for developers to “design, develop and manage complex front-end code for a secret project,” expected to comprise “an advanced web platform.” As a result, it is speculated that Apple might be strategizing to extend its Maps to the web. However, it remains uncertain whether this will only replace Google in apps like Find My iPhone, or if it will produce a full-featured Maps solution for the internet.

Even though Apple continues to use Google Maps on its website for retail store listings, the day’s modification suggests that this could soon be substituted by Apple Maps.
