Instagram Change Profile Grid from Squares to Rectangles

If you use Instagram and your Instagram profile’s beautiful grid isn’t already gone, it might be soon and once it’s gone unknown to you, you’ve probably noticed a huge design update.

Instagram is introducing a major change this weekend: rectangles instead of squares. Instagram’s profile grids now display content as rectangles for some users and if you are yet to notice this, very soon you will get the update. This implies your carefully crafted grid may become jumbled if the proportions of your profile’s content change. The content was previously presented in a square-shaped layout, but it has since changed.

Instagram‘s profile grids will now display material as rectangles rather than squares as part of a change that will take effect “over the weekend,” Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced in an Instagram Story on Friday.

Instagram temporarily tested this modification in August, and the platform’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, has confirmed that it will be rolled out to all users over the weekend. Mosseri disclosed the modification during a recent AMA session, saying: “He knows some of you really enjoy your squares.” And square photographs are somewhat of Instagram’s heritage. However, at this point, the majority of what has been posted, both photographs and videos, is vertical in position,” Mosseri stated. It’s a “bummer to overly crop them,” he remarked.

Mosseri acknowledges that the transformation may be “a bit of a pain,” but he believes it is a “transitional” suffering. “He thinks people will, over the long run, be excited that more of their photos and more of their videos are actually visible as intended in the profile as opposed to aggressively cropped,” according to Mosseri.

Mosseri’s rationale is quite similar to what he said in August, when Instagram revealed it was doing a “limited test” of the modification.

Instagram also announced today that it will include a new section in your Reels feed where you can view videos that your friends have liked.

That adjustment appears to be causing chaos on systems around the world. What was once a flawless image constructed with squares is now a confused mess. Many people observed that their favorite artists’ Instagram feeds appeared strange, for example.

If TikTok is prohibited, there could be a huge migration of TikTok users looking for an alternative to short-form video content. To seize on this opportunity, Instagram has announced two key Reels changes geared at increasing user engagement and encouraging community participation. These capabilities will first be available in the United States, but Instagram says they will be introduced to other locations soon.
