The launch of Meta’s recently unveiled video creation software, Instagram Edits, was more significant than that of its immediate rival, ByteDance’s CapCut. In its first two days on the market, the updated app, which now assists users in creating videos for Instagram reels, stories, and different social media articles, has been downloaded an estimated 702,900 times on iOS devices. Based on data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, that’s about 37 times more downloads on iOS than CapCut saw in the first two days of release.
Edits now has 1.2 million iOS downloads and 5.9 million Android downloads, for a total of 7.1 million as of Thursday. In contrast, during the first three days of its release for iOS and Android, CapCut was downloaded just 83.5K times. Even if CapCut only became available in half of the world’s markets at launch, Edits would still have a significant advantage even if its numbers quadrupled or tripled.
While CapCut had only received 3,400 downloads during its U.S. premiere, Edits had received 381,000 downloads in the first three days in the U.S. alone. To put it more directly, Edits’ U.S. launch was 112 times larger than CapCut’s.
According to Appfigures, Edits’ quick uptake also helped the app rank highly when it first launched, which may assist increase competition and downloads. When it comes to introducing new apps that capitalize on Meta’s larger social networking ecosystem, these figures also show how potent its network effects are.
On its debut day, April 22, the new Instagram companion app topped the charts for both Top Overall apps and Top Apps (excluding games) on the U.S. iPhone App Store. It fell to No. 2 on both charts by day two, stayed there, and then slipped to No. 3 by Friday.
Edits is presently ranked higher than CapCut, which after three days on the market was ranked No. 10 among the top non-game apps on the U.S. App Store and No. 14 overall, because the App Store monitors the top apps based on the velocity of new installs and the quantity of downloads.
Edits still have to catch up to CapCut in terms of total users, though. Since its April 2020 release, the ByteDance-owned app—which is well-liked by TikTok creators—has been downloaded 1.22 billion times on iOS and Android globally, excluding China.
According to Lia Haberman, a social media marketing strategist, in her most recent email, the response to Edits from creators has been conflicting thus far. The app’s ease of use, integrated analytics, ad-free design, support for 4K video, and watermark-free exports were all highly commended. Critics noted that CapCut’s features, such as templates and a wide range of transition effects, were still absent from Edits.
Although Edits has the potential to eventually overtake CapCut, it may decide to implement advertisements or a premium tier as a way to generate revenue.
With a rating of 4.58 on the App Store and a little lower rating of 4.42 on Google Play, it has received widespread consumer acceptance.
