Facebook’s Instagram is at it again. The photo sharing app announced today that it is introducing face filters in the camera. The feature on Snapchat is powered by augmented reality (AR) to apply real time face tracking filters over subjects. Instagram in a blog post said
“Today, we’re introducing face filters in the camera, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining. Whether you’re sitting on the couch at home or you’re out and about, you can use face filters to express yourself and have playful conversations with friends.
From math equations swirling around your head to furry koala ears that move and twitch, you can transform into a variety of characters that make you smile or laugh. To see our initial set of eight face filters, simply open the camera and tap the new face icon in the bottom right corner.”
The new face filter options can be found in the app’s camera section under the face effect icon. One you have use the face filter option, you can then use Instagram’s newly announced tools to add stickers or simply draw an image over it.
As is Snapchat knew that Instagram would eventually somehow copy this feature, they announced a more advanced use of its AR feature that applies photo effects even to images captured using the rear camera.
