Instagram Launches “Ring” — A New Reward for Top Creators

Instagram revealed that it will be starting an awards program, and in the coming weeks, 25 creators will get gold rings. The new awards program, according to the company, will honour artists worldwide that break down barriers and change culture.

Instagram founder and CEO Adam Mosseri, filmmaker Spike Lee, designer Marc Jacobs, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, actress Yara Shadhi, makeup artist Pat McGrath, and others are on the panel of judges for the new awards program.

The winners will get a digital golden ring around their Instagram profile in addition to a real custom ring created by English fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner. They will also have the ability to create a unique “Like” button that will show up when users like feed posts. Notably, there will be no financial compensation given to the winners.

In recent years, Meta has been reducing its creator payment schemes. Meta ended a program earlier this year that compensated creators for advertisements that were displayed in their accounts. The enterprise discontinued rewarding its Reels players and producers on Facebook and Instagram with bonuses in 2023, which was a significant source of revenue for numerous authors. In 2022, the business also stopped offering affiliate marketing bonuses. Those who were struggling at the time expressed their frustration on the internet over missing the cash.

It was observed that on Reddit, one of it member commented, “As ridiculous as it sounds, having the extra money coming in was a blessing for my household in this economy.”

Although no new strategy has been revealed, Mosseri stated in June 2024 that the corporation is thinking about changing creator compensation.

Competitors like TikTok and YouTube both have their own schemes for sharing creative revenue.

In September, YouTube said that it has distributed more over $100 billion to creators over the previous four years.

The introduction of the new awards program coincides with a 52% drop in brand deals for creators in 2024, according to Kajabi study and poll. Last year, Bank of America also stated that there is rivalry in the market due to a slowdown in sponsored partnerships and the concentration of more paid partnerships among the leading creators.

Instagram’s introduction of a symbolic rewards program that provides awardees with no financial recompense is remarkable in light of these recent changes. Rather, it focusses on developing an awards program that is intended to function similarly to the Oscars for content providers, albeit without a formal ceremony.

The award is “all about celebrating those who aren’t afraid to take creative chances and do it their way,” the firm stated in a blog post. People that inspire others with their inventiveness are deserving of praise.

To CNBC, Brownlee said that it’s a more about a special visibility and sort of incentive for people to work towards a really cool elevated recognition.

Instead of just choosing authors with the largest fan bases, he claimed to have selected individuals whose work demonstrated the greatest effort and risk-taking.

In addition, winners can alter the background colour of their profiles and personalise the “like” button.

According to CNBC, Meta was giving creators incentives in January to advertise Instagram on TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. But according to an Instagram representative, these agreements are no longer in effect.

In light of this, Instagram’s new gold rings are notable for being a symbolic gesture rather than providing actual financial assistance in a creative economy that is becoming more and more difficult.

“This could be interpreted as a motivation to create more content for Instagram, or simply as a way to create the best content you can and hopefully receive recognition for it,” Brownlee stated. “It is satisfying to know that your work is inspiring, impressing, or resonating with others, regardless of where you are doing it.”
