Instagram to Remove End-to-End Encryption for DMs in May 2026

Instagram is preparing to discontinue end-to-end encrypted direct messages, marking a surprising shift in Meta’s messaging strategy after years of promoting stronger privacy protections across its platforms.

According to updates on Instagram’s support pages, end-to-end encrypted messaging will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026. Users with encrypted conversations are being notified in the app and will be given instructions on how to download any messages or media they wish to keep before the feature is removed.

The change affects the optional encryption feature that allowed certain Instagram chats to be protected with end-to-end encryption, a system that ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages, preventing even the platform itself from accessing their contents.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) adds an extra layer of security to messaging by locking conversations with cryptographic keys that only the participants possess. This means that messages are encrypted on the sender’s device and can only be decrypted by the recipient’s device.

Instagram introduced the feature in recent years as part of Meta’s broader plan to expand encrypted messaging across its ecosystem, which already includes WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

However, unlike WhatsApp where encryption is enabled by default, Instagram’s encrypted chats were optional and had to be manually activated by users in individual conversations.

Meta has not provided a detailed explanation for the removal, though reports indicate the encrypted chat feature saw very limited adoption among Instagram users.

Another factor may be the increasing regulatory and safety pressure facing social media platforms. Governments and child-safety organizations have argued that end-to-end encryption can make it harder for platforms to detect harmful activity, including scams, abuse, or illegal content.

By removing E2EE from Instagram DMs, Meta may be seeking to simplify moderation and safety monitoring on the platform while continuing to offer encrypted messaging through WhatsApp and Messenger.

What happens to existing encrypted chats?

Instagram says users who currently have encrypted chats will receive guidance on how to download their conversation data before the feature is retired.

After May 8, 2026, those encrypted conversations will no longer function in their current form, and the encryption system supporting them will be removed.

For users who want to continue using fully encrypted messaging within Meta’s ecosystem, WhatsApp will remain the company’s primary platform for end-to-end encrypted communication.
