Instagram is working on a new feature that is to change how users discover shared interests and connect with their friends. The social media’s latest update “Picks,” helps people find common ground through their favourite entertainment videos.
The “Picks” feature allows users to select their favourites movies, books, TV shows, games, and music. Instagram then finds friends who chose the same things and then connect them together.
Instagram confirmed that Picks is currently an internal prototype and isn’t being tested externally, the company is still working on the feature before public release.
The feature was first spotted by Alessandro Paluzzi, who often finds unreleased features while they’re still underway. This way of noticing new features is common in the tech world, where skilled users dig through app code to uncover future features before companies officially announce them.
Instagram probably sees Picks as a method for users to get closer to friends and start discussions about common interests, even if the company hasn’t disclosed any information about the function.
The timing of this feature goes perfectly with Instagram’s vision for 2025. Instagram head Adam Mosseri said earlier this year that the social network was going to focus on creativity in 2025. He says the plan is to help people connect with friends over common interests.
In a January Instagram post, Mosseri stated, “We’re going to double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends over the things they discover on Instagram.”
Social media platforms are facing pressure to prove their value in users’ day to day lives. Critics say that scrolling endlessly contributes to feelings of isolation rather than real connection. Features like Picks show Instagram’s response to these concerns.
Instagram is focusing on shared interest instead of viral content or follower count that makes users want more ways to connect with their existing friends. This helps Instagram stand out from competitors who only focus on reach and engagement over relationship quality.
The feature will also encourage private sharing and smaller group interactions. Rather than pushing users to create content for massive audiences. While Instagram hasn’t released detailed information about Picks’ privacy settings, the feature will likely include controls over what information users choose to share.
The feature’s success will depend largely on user comfort levels with sharing personal information. Some users may embrace the opportunity to connect over shared interests, while others might prefer to keep their entertainment preferences private.
Picks shows industry trends toward more meaningful social media experiences. As platforms grow, companies are moving away from the “broadcast to everyone” toward features that facilitate genuine connections between smaller groups of friends.
It is not known when or if Instagram plans to officially roll out Picks. The company’s confirmation that it remains internal shows that public testing and release could still be months away.
For now, Instagram users will have to see whether Picks moves from internal prototype to public feature. But Instagram investing in tools for deeper connection shows a good direction for social media’s future.
Since Picks adds yet another function to an already busy app, not everyone will be happy with it. Following the release of Instagram Map, several users have not expressed satisfaction, claiming they never wanted the function in the first place.
It’s not clear when or when Instagram intends to formally launch Picks, just like with any other product under development.
