iOS 26 Limits Advanced AI Features to Pro Models

Apple confirmed during WWDC that several of iOS 26’s most advanced Apple Intelligence features will be exclusive to newer iPhones—specifically the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, forthcoming iPhone 16, and any future Pro models. While all supported devices will receive the new “Liquid Glass” interface, only Pro-tier handsets will unlock on-device AI functions like live translation, smart reminders, screenshot analysis, and Genmoji creation.

This hardware restriction isn’t merely marketing—it’s technical. Apple is leaning heavily on the A17 Pro and M1-series chips, which feature significantly more powerful Neural Engines and enhanced on-device machine learning capabilities. The company emphasized that features like screenshot intelligence and real-time translation rely on massive model inference that older or non-Pro chips can’t support .

For users, this cut-off spells a clear line between devices. If you’re on an iPhone 14 Pro or 15, you’ll enjoy the new UI, camera interface, CarPlay overhaul, Podcasts speed boost, and Apple Games app—but you’ll be locked out of the newest AI features that‌ power fluid workflows and multilingual communication.

From a strategic perspective, Apple is deepening its hardware moat. This move nudges users toward Pro models—not just for higher-end photography or displays, but for the next-generation software experience itself. It also simplifies development: apps that leverage Apple Intelligence can now assume a baseline of powerful hardware within the Pro user base and tune fallbacks accordingly.

iOS 26 still brings a major visual and functional refresh across the board. But if your goal is to tap into Apple’s intelligent translation, visual contexts, smart automation, or Genmoji, you’ll need to be on a Pro device—either now or in the next-generation iPhone 16 line-up.
