An acclaimed Japanese smartphone brand, Freetel, known for manufacturing sleek and reasonably priced mobile devices, is steadily extending its international presence. Having already successfully breached the US market a year ago, Freetel is now setting its sights on Africa, commencing its expansion with Nigeria. This strategic move is facilitated by a fresh partnership with TD Mobile, a prominent mobile device distributor in Africa that has long-established its dominance in the Nigerian mobile market.

Freetel is revered for producing Android-powered devices equipped with unique features, such as a security sensor located on the rear side, among others. This breakthrough venture into Nigeria comes in anticipation of the country’s plan to introduce four models of Android smartphones into the market. The exciting collaboration with TD Mobile is set to catalyze the brand’s presence in Africa.

With decades of industry experience under its belt, Freetel has cemented its reputation for exemplary product performance. Eugene Yoshioka, Vice-President of International Sales at Freetel, reaffirms this in reference to the brand’s adherence to Google’s GMS performance requirements. “The GMS certification is the confirmation that a specific device meets Google’s performance requirements and properly runs the Google apps,” Yoshioka confirms.

Nigeria, the second-largest market for gadgets after South Africa according to a Pew Research Centre survey, presents a promising opportunity for Freetel. Amidst significant competition from notable brands like Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo, Techno, and Infinix, Freetel is enthusiastic about its potential to secure a substantial market share.

Expressing his excitement about the prospective venture, Yoshioka shared, “Nigeria is the market for Freetel and we are looking to reach out to Nigerian consumers with our latest smartphone. We plan to invest in the country with a full-fledged subsidiary to support sales, marketing, and after-sales support. We are glad that we are partnering with the most powerful and trusted partner in the region – TD Africa.”

From this moment forward, the Freetel brand is poised to join the expanding roster of international brands affiliated with TD Africa. Highlighting the far-reaching distribution network of its partner, Yoshioka added, “Considering its wide reach, distribution network, massive retailer base, and unmatched presence in major Nigerian cities and other West Africa capitals, the partnership will see the company deploy its latest capacity in taking the lineup of products from the Freetel stable to every action in the metropolis as well as every nook and cranny in the hinterlands.”

Given the diverse product portfolio Freetel has to offer, the firm is eager to capture a significant portion of the market. Mrs. Gozy Ijogun, the Managing Director of TD Mobile, affirms, “As a key driver of the technology revolution in Africa, TD Mobile has strived to bring the latest and best of technology products to Nigeria and the West Africa region by extension. In line with this, Freetel and TD Mobile have entered into an exclusive partnership to bring Japanese smartphone to Nigeria. We believe we can capture a major market share with the help of our extensive distribution reach and strategic partnership with operators, dealers and retailers.”

Intriguingly, how these devices perform and whether they can provide a robust experience that can rival other Android brands remains to be seen. Nevertheless, with Freetel’s reputable Japanese quality and TD Mobile’s established market penetration, this partnership promises to be a game-changer in the Nigerian smartphone landscape.
