Controversial antivirus company founder John McAfee was discovered dead in his jail cell in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday, not long after Spain’s National Court supported his extradition to the United States to face criminal charges related to tax.

The Spanish paper El Mundo initially announced that the 75-year-old McAfee was dead, as indicated by the Catalan Justice Department.

El Mundo, refering to the Catalan Justice Department, additionally said the jail’s clinical experts endeavored to revive him. McAfee was being held at the Brians 2 jail in Catalunya.

McAfee was arrested last October in Barcelona airport on the tax avoidance charges, which are forthcoming in government court in Tennessee. He had been held in prison in Spain from then till his eventual demise.

As per the prosecution, McAfee made money from cryptocurrency promotion, counselling  and offering the rights to his biography.

McAfee additionally was charged in Tennessee government court in March with neglecting to report revenue from promotion of cryptocurrencies.

“McAfee Team members collectively earned more than $2 million in illicit profits from their altcoin scalping activities,” the Justice Department said earlier this year.

Taunting the United States government, the late McAfee tweeted last week that “The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized.” He went on to say that My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”

McAfee is a controversial tech figure who until his death was in a fight with the company he founded in 1994. In 2013, he created a video showing people how to uninstall McAfee antivirus from your computer.

In 2019, a federal court in Florida ordered McAfee to pay more than $25 million in damages to the estate of a Florida man named Gregory Faull, who allegedly was murdered in Belize at the direction of McAfee in 2012.

Faull owned a property along a beach next to McAfee, two of whose dogs allegedly were poisoned by Faull.

McAfee earlier had fled Belize and faked a heart attack in order to return to the United States.. He never was criminally charged in Faull’s killing.

McAfee was 75 and it’s not clear when his body would likely be flown back to the United States.

It’s the end of an era and he will be mostly remembered as a controversial tech icon.
