Lagos Introduces Drone Monitoring To Increase Security

The Lagos State Government has started a drone surveillance program to enhance the LNSC Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps’ emergency response and crime monitoring throughout the state.

At the 2025 Annual Ministerial Press Briefing, which took place on Tuesday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations Olugbenga Oyerinde made this announcement.

Oyerinde claims that the drone technology will immediately feed data into a newly created ICT-based situation room built, by providing real-time aerial pictures of criminal hotspots in Lagos State.

He went on to say that the state’s larger plan to update its security infrastructural system and strengthen safety at the local level saw a significant turning point with the use of drone monitoring.

The drone technology is currently being used to actively map crimes, monitor hotspots, and provide real-time images to our situation room. A cutting-edge ICT-based situation room that can process real-time data from the security cameras and drones positioned throughout the state has been finished.

Their mission is straightforward and well-thought-out: to make our communities and environment safer, equip cops with training and technology, and bring security to the people. We are creating a proactive, connected, and resilient Lagos,” Oyerinde revealed.

The commissioner also added that in an effort to increase the number of local security officers in communities throughout the state, the LNSC has hired over 1,000 new officers.

In order to address the state’s changing security requirements, Oyerinde also announced the creation of specialized groups inside the organization, such as the Marine Patrol – to supervise and monitor canal and waterways security in Lagos, Forest Rangers – for isolated and uncontrolled areas, Forensics – to provide scientific proof to back up investigations, and Domestic Violence Response Teams – which must respond quickly and tactfully to abuse incidents.

By combining investigative, reactive, and preventive capabilities, these units exhibit a comprehensive approach to security.

He claimed that in order to provide coverage in both urban and heavily populated areas, the government had replaced the officers’ antiquated equipment with new patrol cars, bicycles, scooters, and motorbikes.

“In addition to cutting expenses and improving our presence in crowded locations, the commissioner clarified that they have replaced unusable and unserviceable vehicles with patrol bicycles to increase the effectiveness of our presence in heavily populated areas.”

The start of the drone surveillance program in Lagos signifies a change from conventional to technologically assisted law enforcement. The Lagos State Government wants to establish a national standard for proactive urban security through community-focused tactics and real-time visual intelligence.

As urbanization and population density continue to increase, the state’s ambition for a smarter and more secure megacity is reflected in the combination of aerial surveillance, ICT infrastructure, and skilled staff.

Lagos is revolutionizing emergency response and community safety in Nigeria through the use of drones, staffing increases, the establishment of specialized units, and investments in transportation infrastructure. Given the escalating rates of urban crime and the need for more intelligent government, other states may soon follow the innovative model set by the Lagos drone monitoring program.
