Man Claims He Invented the iPhone in 1992, Demands $10 Billion from Apple

It’s quite common to witness technology companies embroiled in legal battles over patent designs and intellectual property rights. However, something unusual has unfolded recently. A lone individual has come forward asserting that he conceived the pioneering design of the iPhone before its actual creators.

Besides the sensational claim and lawsuit, many are left pondering – why now? Since its initial launch in 2007, Apple has considerably expanded its iPhone series, achieving over a billion sales worldwide. As the iPhone stands on the brink of some significant transformations, including potential plans to retire its iconic home button, we can’t help but share this intriguing story.

A Florida man named Thomas Ross claims he, not tech legend Steve Jobs, conceived the ground-breaking devices – the iPhone and the iPad. If his assertions are correct, he believes Apple owes him a staggering $10 billion for purloining his idea.

To bolster his stunning claims, Ross cites sketches from 1992 which feature a rectangular device with a screen – reminiscent of Apple’s ubiquitous iPhone. This design, a full 15 years before the release of Apple’s first iPhone, is presented as evidence that Ross was the original visionary behind these revolutionary devices.

Remarkably, Ross’ sketches resemble several electronic devices present in the market today: the Kindle, a personal digital assistant, and even the Nintendo DS. These devices, like the iPhone, all feature a rectangular shape with a screen. Additionally, a second drawing showcases a clamshell model with touchscreens on both sides and an accompanying stylus. This design strikingly resembles Nintendo’s handheld system.

Ross initially labelled these designs as “electronic reading devices” in his patent request back in 1992. However, his patent was forfeited in 1995 after failing to pay the application fee.

“The device, constituting the invention, is a computerized, electronic reading device, the purpose of which is to provide an alternative to paper-based print-media such as books, magazines, manuscripts and news media,” Ross explained in his original patent request.

Ross’ lawsuit fired back at Apple, accusing the tech giant of creating “ERD lookalike units” – essentially copies of his original idea. Alongside billions in compensation, he also demands that Apple destroy all “copies and knock-offs” crafted from his invention.

In March 2015, Ross sent a cease and desist letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, accusing the company of exploiting his design. In response, Apple legal counsel Jeffrey Lasker wrote, “Any pursuit of claims against Apple in light of these facts would be baseless and objectively unreasonable.”

Only time will tell how this lawsuit unfolds and whether Ross can substantiate his bold claims about the creation of the iPhone.
