Megaupload Founder Kim Dotcom Declares Bankruptcy Amidst Legal Struggles

Does the name Megaupload ring any bells? Founded in 2005, it was an online Hong Kong–based company that provided an array of online services centered around file storage and viewing, prominently via megaupload.com. Once a titan in its domain, the company found itself scrutinized by legal and governmental authorities. This culminated in the seizure of Megaupload’s domain and the arrest of its founder, Kim Dotcom, in New Zealand in 2012.

Despite Megaupload being valued at a staggering $164 million, financial difficulties seem to be plaguing Dotcom. According to him, nearly $10 million has been drained from his pockets to cover his mounting legal costs.

Dotcom had initially recruited a local law firm, equipped to challenge the U.S. government’s attempt to extradite him. However, two weeks ago, his entire defense team decided to step back from the case, mysteriously withholding their reasons for doing so.

Facing a bail hearing on Thursday, Dotcom has chosen to represent himself. The embattled entrepreneur firmly denies all charges levelled against him, including racketeering, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, and money laundering.

During a conference in London, he revealed via a video link that the abrupt resignation of his lawyers was due to him running out of funds. “The [US authorities] have certainly managed to drain my resources and leave me high and dry. Without my lawyers, I’m defenceless,” he candidly expressed.

He further added, “They used this opportunity to attempt to get my bail revoked and that’s the predicament I currently find myself in.”

Attempts to reach Simpson Grierson, the law firm previously representing Dotcom, for their comment on the matter have so far been unsuccessful.
