Meta Launches Teen Accounts on Messenger and Facebook Globally

Earlier today, Meta revealed that its Teen Accounts, which were previously only accessible to users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, are now being extended to teens on Facebook and Messenger worldwide. The accounts were first introduced on Instagram last autumn and come with parental settings and built-in protections for younger users.

Teen Accounts were first introduced soon after U.S. senators criticised Meta and other well-known social networks for failing to adequately safeguard teenagers using their services.

Teenagers will suddenly be thrust into an environment that is intended to restrict unwanted contact and contents that not suitable due to Facebook and Messenger’s global expansion. Teens under 16 cannot alter any settings without their parents’ consent.

Teens will also only receive messages from individuals they have previously messaged or who they follow. Teens’ tales can only be viewed and responded to by their friends. Additionally, only those they follow or who are friends will be able to tag, mention, and remark.

Teens who might be lying about their age can be identified by Meta using AI. With features like screen time tracking and the ability to see who their children are messaging, the accounts give parents the option to keep an eye on how their kids use Meta’s apps. Additionally, teen accounts have more stringent privacy and safety settings designed to prevent their interactions with strangers.

Teens will also be placed in “Quiet mode” overnight and reminded to stop using social media after an hour of use each day.

Teen Accounts’ expansion follows research conducted by a Meta whistleblower that shown that despite Instagram’s precautions, children and teenagers are still opened to internet harm.

Meta also said that all teenagers are now required to have an account, and younger kids (ages 13 to 15) must obtain parental consent before changing any safety-related settings.

Despite being placed in Teen Accounts, the study found that young users may still encounter posts about degrading sexual practices, death, and self-harm. Meta has refused the allegations, claiming that its safeguards have reduced the amount of hazardous content that teenagers see.

Meta also revealed today that it is formally establishing the School Partnership Program, which enables teachers to submit safety issues, like as bullying, straight to Instagram for expedited assessment and deletion.

According to the corporation, participating schools gave the program excellent feedback during its earlier this year pilot. All U.S. middle and high schools can now enrol in the program to get education resources and prioritised reporting. To let parents and students know that they are an official Instagram partner, participating schools will get a banner on their Instagram account.

The announcement on Thursday is Meta’s most recent move to address social media-related mental health issues among teenagers. The U.S. Surgeon General and a number of states have voiced these worries; some have even begun to prohibit teenagers from using social media without parental permission.
