Meta is launching a new tool that uses AI view synthesis techniques to let users view Instagram 3D photographs through Quest VR headsets. This new tool, Instagram uses to experiments with it displaying 3D images when viewing your feed using a Meta Quest VR headset.

Without the use of specialized equipment, ordinary 2D photos will be converted into captivating 3D images. Since this function is still in its limited test period, not all users may be able to access it right away.

Meta claims in a blog post that “we can transform the existing photos that show up in Instagram feed pixel by pixel – no fancy 3D cameras required” because of their AI view synthesis algorithms. This implies that when you view 2D images on Quest, flat photos that weren’t initially taken in 3D will be automatically transformed into an immersive format that adds depth.

The test is launching this week as Meta notes that “3D Instagram photos on Quest won’t be available to everyone initially – and even those in the test group might not see the feature immediately.” This isn’t Meta’s first experiment with 3D photos; the company previously introduced a similar feature on Facebook back in 2018.

This test of 3D Instagram photographs is part of a bigger Meta Quest’s v77 upgrade, which is one of a kind among the many features included in Meta Quest’s v77 update. And this also includes the test of 3D photos on Instagram, is Navigator, which Meta refers to as “a new home for your games and apps, friends, notifications, essential system settings, and more on Quest.”

Pressing the Meta or Oculus button on the right controller will bring up the Navigator. You can pin up to ten items to make them more accessible, and it provides access to recently used apps. Meta’s website features a video that provides additional details on Navigator.

Navigator streamlines the VR interface by enabling users to pin up to ten items for easy access through the Meta or Oculus button on the right controller.

In addition, the v77 version allows you to choose a window that can follow you around and integrates the Meta Quest Link, casting, and remote desktop into a single PC application called Horizon for PC. It also adds experimental support for Bluetooth Low Energy audio devices.

The v77 update also includes the following features:

Bluetooth Low Energy Audio Support: Bluetooth Low Energy audio devices are being experimentally supported, which could enhance audio quality.

Movable Window for Multitasking: To improve multitasking in the VR environment, users can choose a window that moves with them.

Horizon for PC: A brand-new PC program that streamlines the connection between VR headsets and PCs by combining Meta Quest Link, casting, and remote desktop features.

Meta’s continuous efforts to improve the Quest VR headsets’ usability and functionality are reflected in these updates.
