Indeed, Meta has started testing Instagram Plus. Meta told members of the press on Monday that it has started testing a premium Instagram membership in select nations. Instagram Plus is a subscription service that grants users access to special features. It is also regarded as a new premium membership plan for regular users. The action was taken two months after Meta announced to the members of the press that it intended to test additional Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp subscriptions.
This service is distinct from Meta Verified, which is mainly intended for businesses and creators seeking support and verification.
The option to watch a story, a picture, or a video post that vanishes after a day without the poster knowing you did so is one of Instagram’s premium features. According to an email from Meta to members of the press, subscribers may now view the number of people who have rewatched their own Stories.
Instagram Plus tends to offer exclusive story-focused tools:
- Invisible viewing: View Stories without appearing in the viewer list.
- Rewatch analytics: See how many people rewatched your Story.
- Extended Story Life: Keep stories visible for 48 hours.
- Unlimited audience Lists: Custom story sharing beyond “Close Friends.”
- Weekly Story Spotlight: Pin a Story to the front of followers’ trays.
- Animated Superlikes: Send special animated reactions.
- Viewer List Search: Quickly find if someone viewed your Story.
Beyond a Close Friends list, subscribers will be able to build an infinite number of audience lists for Stories. This implies that rather than having the choice to share with everyone or just a select group of followers, users may tailor who sees each Story by grouping followers into separate lists.
Subscribers can also choose to spotlight a story up to once a week, which increases its visibility by putting it at the top of the stories tray for followers, and extend their story for an additional 24 hours.
Instead of having to go through the complete list, subscribers can search their story viewer list and offer an animated “Superlike” on other people’s stories to quickly find out if a certain individual has viewed their story. Although Meta does not disclose the nations in which it is testing the premium subscription, social media reports suggest that Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines are among them.
The cost varies by nation; however, user-shared screenshots show that it costs MX$39 (about $2.20 USD) in Mexico, ¥319 (around $2 USD) in Japan, and PHP 65 (roughly $1.07 USD) in the Philippines.
Meta may also be testing the subscription in other nations.
It’s important to note that Meta Verified, which caters to companies and content creators and provides features like a verified badge and impersonation protections for a monthly cost, is distinct from Instagram’s premium subscription. Instead, Instagram Plus is intended for regular users.
Subscription weariness will probably discourage many customers, even though the introduction of new subscriptions will enable Meta to make more money. Social media has already been used by some consumers to express their dissatisfaction with the subscription service.
Of course, there is a market for social media subscriptions, as demonstrated by Snapchat and X. Snap recently revealed that Snapchat+, which offers premium features for $3.99 a month, has more than 25 million users.
Before expanding the Instagram premium subscription, Meta says it will keep evaluating it.
Although these are still in the early stages of development or planning, Meta is apparently investigating premium tiers for Facebook and WhatsApp that would feature enhanced AI capabilities and ad-free options.
