Meta has introduced a series of new monetisation capabilities on WhatsApp, aiming at helping individuals, businesses and organisations grow their reach and generate cash via the app’s updates page. The social media and internet giant announced the debut of three essential features: Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Adverts in Status.

With three new features designed to help businesses, organizations, and creators expand their reach and make money off of their content, Meta has made significant modifications to WhatsApp’s Updates page.

The Updates page, which contains both Status and Channels, will now offer Promoted Channels for discoverability, Ads in Status for business visibility, and Channel Subscriptions for exclusive updates, according to a statement issued by Meta on Monday.

These changes are a part of WhatsApp’s larger effort to facilitate business operations without compromising users’ private messaging experiences. Also these features reflect WhatsApp’s most ambitious attempt to date to monetize the platform and represent a significant expansion of its business strategy.

For years, we have been discussing how to use WhatsApp to develop a business without interfering with private conversations. Meta stated, “We think the Updates tab is the best place to introduce that.”

Every day, more than 1.5 billion users use the Updates tab to follow public personalities and creators through Channels or see their friends’ status updates, according to Meta.

The company sees a clear opportunity to provide business-friendly technologies because of this large user base.

Users can now purchase exclusive updates from their preferred channels, which include news organizations, content producers, and sports teams, for a monthly price through Channel Subscriptions.

According to Meta, who described the three features, WhatsApp users can now pay a monthly subscription price to obtain unique material from their favourite channels, like news organizations, producers, or sports teams.

It stated that WhatsApp will start recommending new channels to users through Promoted Channels according to their preferences. This is the first paid option for businesses and creators to increase their visibility on the app.

With the help of Promoted Channels, WhatsApp will be able to suggest channels to users based on their interests, giving businesses and artists a paid tool to increase their visibility and audience on the app.

Similar to Instagram Stories, it stated that companies will be able to insert targeted advertisements in the Status feature, which will let consumers find new goods and services and communicate with marketers directly. And also the status ads will allow companies to insert tailored advertising within the status function, letting users find goods and services and communicate with marketers directly.

With respect to the users privacy, Meta underlined that WhatsApp’s basic value of privacy was upheld when developing the new capabilities.

“Your personal messages, calls, and groups remain end-to-end encrypted, and that includes your Status updates. Your phone number will never be sold to or shared with advertising, Meta promised.

“We’ll utilize limited information, such as your nation or city, language, the channels you follow, and how you engage with the advertisements you see, to display ads in Status or Channels you might care about.

We will also use your ad settings and information from all of your Meta accounts if you have opted to add WhatsApp to the Accounts Centre.

“Your phone number will never be sold to or shared with advertisers. The advertising you may see won’t be based on your private calls, texts, or groups you’re in, the business said.

According to Meta, the functionalities will be introduced progressively over the next few months. Businesses or channel administrators that are keen to get started can currently obtain additional information through official WhatsApp Business resources.

Meta reaffirmed that end-to-end encryption is maintained for all private messages, calls, and group chats, demonstrating that the new capabilities were created with privacy in mind.

We will also use the data from all Meta accounts and the ad preferences of those who have opted to link WhatsApp to Accounts Centre. But we will never give your phone number to advertising or sell it to them,” it stated.

The additions will be released progressively over the next few months, according to Meta. Additional information is already available through official WhatsApp Business resources for channel administrators and companies interested in implementing the features.
