Windows Backup for Organisations which has been formally announced by Microsoft is a new enterprise-grade backup application from Microsoft that helps streamline backups and ease the move to Windows 11, became generally available this week. It is also an enterprise-focused backup solution made to help IT teams with Windows 11 upgrades and device transfers.

The solution would assist companies in maintaining Microsoft Store installations, app preferences, and system settings on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, according to the company.

This opt-in feature, which is disabled by default and has been in public preview since May 2025, was first revealed at the Microsoft Ignite conference in November 2024.

On Entra-joined devices, Windows Backup for Organisations is accessible following the September 2025 Windows Monthly Cumulative Update; however, it requires an IT administrator to enable it by setting up backup and restore policy settings.

Turned on, this application can backup Windows settings, preferences, and programs installed from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. It can also assist in restoring them on Windows 11 PCs while the device is being set up.

In a Microsoft 365 Message Centre update, the had company stated that this enterprise-grade feature helps IT teams streamline device transitions by securely preserving user settings and Microsoft Store app installations.

“Whether upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 or refreshing Windows 11 PCs, this feature ensures a consistent user experience and supports business continuity through robust backup and rapid recovery capabilities.”

Windows Backup for Organisations, if activated, automatically protects user data, settings, and applications so that they can be easily restored throughout the Windows 11 setup process.

The technology is “enterprise-grade,” according to Microsoft, which promises safe cloud storage and easy administration for extensive implementations. Exchange Online stores all backed-up data under the tenant’s designated nation or area and is secured by several encryption levels.

The Exchange Online cloud stores data backed up with Windows Backup for Organisations in the country or region chosen during tenant creation in the admin site.

Through the path Admin > Settings > Org Settings > Organisation Profile > Data Location in the Tenant Admin Centre, you can see where your tenant’s data is stored.

Microsoft claims that its customer data is encrypted in one or more ways and will only be accessed when required under close management supervision (for example, for legal compliance or troubleshooting).

The company also stated that Microsoft personnel may use customer data only for purposes compatible with providing you with the contracted services, such as troubleshooting and improving features like protection from malware. And also says Microsoft employees can only access data under close supervision, for example, for troubleshooting or legal compliance. In addition, the new feature guarantees consistent user experiences across devices, which helps with business continuity.

Before Windows 10’s end-of-support date in October 2025, businesses preparing to migrate to Windows 11 in large quantities may find that Windows Backup for Organisations is an essential component of their deployment plan.
