In an unprecedented move, tech titans Microsoft and Facebook have decided to join forces to build a subsea cable across the vast expanses of the Atlantic. This venture aims to address the increasing demands of their steadily expanding online services, connecting users from both sides of the ocean like never before.

The announcement of this partnership brings to light Microsoft’s ongoing initiative to connect its data centers around the globe in an interconnected web of digital information. Having made significant strides in this endeavor just last year, the company’s latest venture with Facebook is aptly named MAREA, hinting at the project’s deep-sea origins. The construction of this highly-anticipated cable is set to kick off in August, aiming for completion by October 2017.

This robust subsea cable has the potential to transmit a staggering 160 terabits of data per second. This impressive figure, confirmed by both companies, illustrates the scale and ambition of this collaborative effort.

Meanwhile, Google is not being left in the dust. The tech giant has also dipped its toes into the subsea cable sector, striking up a mutually beneficial agreement with five leading companies in Asia. Their approach focuses on strengthening connectivity between the United States and Japan, bringing East and West closer together in the digital world.

Innovative solutions don’t stop at just connectivity. Tech companies are also striving towards environmentally-friendly methods for the operation of these underwater data centers. Having the center under the sea creates potential for utilizing renewable energy sources, such as tidal power, at budget-friendly rates. Another major advantage is the considerably lower cost of cooling the equipment, a major cost factor in conventional land-based data centers.

Such innovations form the core of Microsoft’s Project Natick, which achieved remarkable success with a four-month operational test of a seafloor data center. This project is a shining example of the company’s commitment to creating cutting-edge, sustainable solutions to meet the demands of a digital-age society.
