One of the most dangerous apps on your phone is email. This is because users must switch to alternatives to continue receiving emails and continue with their businesses; Microsoft’s decision to discontinue one of its well-known mobile email programs has security ramifications. Outlook Lite, the app designed only for Android users, will close in just six weeks, the company has now revealed.
This Android app will no longer function after May 25. Now check your phone. This final time frame before the app loses all functional email access is known as the “six-week countdown.”
Outlook Lite on Android will “officially lose all mailbox access” on that day, according to Neowin, “as Microsoft shifts its focus to the feature-rich Outlook Mobile.”
Now, Outlook Mobile is the default app on both iOS and Android. Android’s own choice, Outlook Lite, is no longer available. Outlook Lite was never available for iOS. This app is intended for Android users and their less powerful devices.
Although fresh installs have been prohibited for the past six months, it’s unknown how many users the prohibition affects. According to Microsoft, the Outlook Lite software was discontinued starting October 6, 2025. Before completely retiring, current users can utilize the app for a little period of time. Users with older or less powerful devices are likely to utilize it because it’s a lighter option than the full-fat Outlook Mobile software.
Microsoft stated the reason for the shutdown was a move to reduce redundant development and deliver stronger security with enhanced functionality; Microsoft is shifting its focus entirely to the flagship Outlook Mobile app.
Neowin states that “the Outlook Lite app will still be open, but mailbox access will be disabled and in-app navigation and functionality won’t work” beyond the deadline next month. Nothing will function properly, but no accounts will be erased.
Instead, Microsoft advises customers to utilize Outlook Mobile, where “all existing email, calendar items, and attachments will remain accessible when users sign in.” All mobile users will benefit from increased security thanks to this consolidation.
“Microsoft has been on a bit of a culling spree with its apps lately,” according to XDA-Developers. As a result, you should anticipate additional adjustments. Fortunately, anyone impacted by this most recent modification has a simple and pre-configured escape route.
Neowin further explains that there is also an upgrade option inside the Outlook Lite app, which will send you off to the Play Store to get the latest update, in addition to going into the Play Store and finding Outlook Mobile manually. “It might be easier for administrators to guide users here.
The most recent versions of Microsoft Outlook for iOS and Android are available here. If you use Outlook on an Android phone, be sure you have upgraded to Outlook Mobile and are not using this Android-specific software.
Microsoft advises its users to switch to Outlook mobile by downloading the main Outlook app from the Play Store to replace the discontinued version. No data loss; emails, calendars, and attachments are saved in the cloud and will reappear after signing in. Also, Microsoft advises its users to check their devices; starting in January 2026, the full Outlook app will require Android 10.0 or higher for updates.
