Microsoft is set to release the stable version of its Edge browser for Linux later in the week. For more than a year now, the preview versions of Edge for Linux have been in circulation, the official launch of the Edge browser will feature the Edge supported fully on Linux with regular stable channel updates.
Linux is a Unix-like, open-source, and community-developed operating system (OS) for computers, servers, mainframes, mobile devices, and embedded devices. It is supported on almost every major computer platform, including x86, ARM, and SPARC, making it one of the most widely supported operating systems.
For users already utilizing the preview version of Edge on Linux, the latest stable version is available by running the sudo apt install Microsoft-edge-stable command. For users new to Edge on Linux, you can find the installer is now available on Microsoft’s website.
Quite a number of Linux users are already familiar with Chrome or Firefox, but Edge is yet another browser option guaranteed to work on distros where Chrome isn’t fully supported. A number of privacy features have been added by Microsoft to the latest Edge browser to limit tracking and cookies, and the Linux version of Edge shares most of the same features that are now available on Edge is now available on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux.
As it did when introducing the new Edge on macOS, Microsoft has been positioning Edge on Linux as more of an offering for IT pros and developers who want to test websites than as a browser for “normal” users on those platforms. However, any user on any supported platform can use the new Edge.
