Mounting Allegations of Sexual Misconduct and Workplace Abuse at Uber: Employees Break Silence

A tumultuous saga unfurled over the past weekend when a brave former female employee exposed what appears to be a persistent atmosphere of gender hostility at one of the world’s leading ride-hailing companies, Uber. Following this public revelation, several other employees, past and present, have emerged from the shadows to put forth an array of allegations concerning sexual abuses and the prevalence of a hostile work environment within the organization.

The New York Times (NYT), renowned for its journalistic prowess, broke this hard-hitting story. The details were shared by around 30 Uber employees (a blend of current staffers and ex-colleagues) who recounted their distressing experiences to journalist Mike Isaac of The Times.

“The evidences shared through interviews with more than 30 employees, combined with internal emails, chat logs, and tape-recorded meetings, sketch an unsettling image of an often unrestrained and noxious workplace culture. The most shocking accusations coming forth would make anyone’s blood run cold: an Uber manager allegedly groped the breasts of female co-workers at a corporate retreat in Las Vegas. An Uber director let loose a homophobic slur during a pitched confrontation in a meeting. A manager reportedly threatened to bash an underperforming employee’s head in with a baseball bat. All the employees involved have requested to remain anonymous, fearing retaliation and respecting their confidentiality agreements.”

These horrendous revelations have culminated in a severe crisis for Uber, which had recently hired a former Attorney General from the Obama Administration to investigate Susan Fowler’s allegations of widespread sexual misconduct within the company. The NYT report added that, in the wake of this scandal, disillusioned Uber employees are seriously contemplating quitting the company, while others have expressed their willingness to offer the company an opportunity to alter its track before taking any significant decisions about their professional futures.

Amid this ongoing controversy, another significant event saw Uber CEO, Travis Kalanick, abruptly leaving President Trump’s economic advisory team following the contentious immigration ban. The ban primarily affected Uber’s driving workforce, many of whom felt that the company was unsupportive of their strike in response to the presidency’s executive order. Consequently, Uber launched a $3 million legal fund dedicated to assisting affected drivers. However, this move has been interpreted as an afterthought by some as it took place following the #DeleteUber campaign on Twitter, a protest act which led to over 200,000 users eliminating the Uber app from their devices.
