Pocket, a useful bookmarking application for saving articles and webpages for later, is being shut down by Mozilla. In order to focus its “resources into projects that better match their browsing habits and online needs,” Mozilla said that Pocket will cease operations on July 8, 2025.
Mozilla recently revealed that it is discontinuing Pocket, its read-it-later service, as part of a larger initiative to intensify its focus on Firefox. This is how it will operate.
Mozilla states that it must “be intentional about where we invest our time and resources” in its announcement. And that means Firefox at the moment.
By July 8, 2025, Pocket, which has operated for more than ten years, will formally close. Less than two years have passed since the Pocket app for Mac was shut down.
Pocket users won’t be able to export saves after the shutdown until October 8, 2025, at which point Mozilla will permanently erase user data. Also Pocket users will no longer be able to download the app or sign up for Pocket Premium as of right now. According to the corporation, automatic refunds for yearly subscribers will begin in July. Also according to Mozilla, on July 8th, those who have signed up for its annual plan will receive prorated refunds, and the company will also begin automatically terminating subscriptions.
According to Mozilla, user data will be permanently erased on October 8, however saved things can be exported until then. On the same day, the Pocket API will also go down.
It has also taken down the Pocket web extension and app as of May 22nd, 2025, although customers who have already loaded the app will be able to re-download it until October 8th.
The business will shut down Fakespot, which it purchased in 2023, even sooner. As of July 1, 2025, the Fakespot website, mobile apps, and browser extensions will no longer function, and its connection with Firefox, Review Checker, will go down on June 10.
According to Mozilla, the choice takes into account how users now browse and save content:
Millions of people have used Pocket to find worthwhile stories and save articles. However, people’s online content consumption and saving habits have changed, so we’re focusing our efforts on projects that better fit modern browsing patterns. Additionally, discovery is still developing; Pocket contributed to the creation of the carefully chosen content recommendations that Firefox currently offers, and this experience will only improve. Meanwhile, there are now built-in methods for managing reading lists with ease thanks to new features like Tab Groups and improved bookmarking.
The company’s sign-off suggests that it will prioritize AI-powered products, a trend that was evident at recent developer meetings hosted by Google and Microsoft.
Pocket, formerly called Read It Later, started in 2007 and developed in popularity as individuals used it to keep track of the articles, recipes, movies, and more that they wanted to revisit. In 2015, Mozilla brought Pocket to Firefox as the browser’s default read-it-later app, and then acquired it two years later.
Mozilla claims that “the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved,” which is why it is closing Pocket. Although it will no longer have a weekend edition, Pocket’s email newsletter, Pocket Hits, will continue to exist under the new name Ten Tabs.
Mozilla is sunsetting its Fakespot false review scanner in addition to closing Pocket. Mozilla claims to have purchased Fakespot in 2023 in order to use AI and privacy-first technology to assist users in navigating shaky product reviews. “The concept struck a chord, but it didn’t fit a model we could stick with.” On June 10th, 2025, Firefox’s built-in Fakespot tool, Review Checker, will also shut down.
“With tools like vertical tabs, smart search, and more AI-powered features on the way, this shift allows us to shape the next era of the internet,” Mozilla states. “We’ll keep developing a browser that is more powerful, more individualized, and proudly independent so that it can work harder for you.”
