If you’re an MTN user in Lagos and you’ve been struggling with poor network service lately, you’re definitely not alone. MTN Nigeria has confirmed it is experiencing network issues affecting customers in parts of Lagos State. The telecom giant broke its silence after thousands of customers took to social media to complain about dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and complete service blackouts in various areas across the city.
This isn’t exactly new territory for MTN subscribers. The network provider has been dealing with service challenges throughout 2025, and Lagos users have been particularly affected by these recurring outages.
MTN hasn’t provided any explanations about what exactly caused this latest round of service disruptions. However, they have pointed to several factors that have been plaguing Nigerian telecom operators throughout the year such as the network to fibre cuts across the country, with MTN and Airtel reportedly experiencing nearly 80 fibre cuts daily. These fibre optic cable cuts have become a serious problem, often caused by construction activities, vandalism, or even natural factors.
The power situation in Nigeria also plays a major role in network stability. Telecom base stations require consistent electricity to function properly, and with the country’s ongoing power challenges, maintaining 24/7 network coverage is increasingly difficult .
The timing of these outages couldn’t be worse. Lagos is experiencing rapid digital transformation, with more businesses moving online and residents increasingly depending on digital services. When network infrastructure can’t keep up with this growing demand, everyone suffers. Small business owners who rely on mobile payments lose customers, students miss important online lectures, and remote workers struggle to stay productive.
The company’s response to customer complaints has been the usual corporate speak about “working to restore services” and “apologizing for any inconvenience caused.” While these statements are expected, what subscribers really want to see are permanent solutions.
Some users have found creative ways to work around these network issues. Many have started keeping backup internet devices from different network providers, while others have learned to identify the times of day when network congestion is typically lower. However, these shouldn’t be necessary survival tactics in 2025.
Other network operators in Lagos haven’t been immune to similar challenges, but MTN’s large subscriber base means that when their network goes down, more people are affected. This puts additional pressure on the company to not just fix current problems but to build more infrastructure that can handle future growth.
Moving forward, the company will need to be more transparent about the causes of these outages and provide realistic timelines for solutions.
The next few months will be crucial for MTN to prove that their massive infrastructure investments are more than just press release material and actually result in the reliable network service that Lagos deserves.
