Netflix, once a DVD-by-mail business, has successfully transformed into a leading online streaming service with aspirations of becoming the world’s premier online television network. A critical aspect of this growth trajectory has been the ambitious endeavor towards developing proprietary content. The journey began with the production of original shows such as “House of Cards” and “Lilyhammer,” later diversifying to include various types of content forms such as stand-up specials, documentaries, children’s programming, and prime-time shows. However, Netflix’s image as a hub for on-demand videos, optimal for binge-watching, remains firmly anchored.
In 2016, Netflix underscored its commitment to producing original content by announcing a collaboration with comedian Chelsea Handler for a ‘late-night’ talk show designed specifically for its streaming service. Details about the show’s execution or release timeline were sparse at the time of announcement, but Netflix conveyed that the show would have a global reach, simultaneously combining entertainment, current affairs, and guest interactions in a novel format.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, indicated that Netflix was enthusiastic about revamping traditional late-night talk shows for the on-demand era. Ample preparation time was set aside prior to the show’s launch in 2016, allowing sufficient time to refine the program’s pace and structure.
In the lead-up to the talk show’s premiere, Netflix released a one-hour stand-up comedy special called “Uganda Be Kidding Me,” featuring Chelsea Handler. Filmed in Chicago, the special was live-streamed on the platform on October 10. Handler also committed to producing four “docu-comedy specials” in the subsequent year, offering unique insights on a wide range of topics like NASCAR, politics, Silicon Valley, and the NBA draft.
In a recent trading session, Netflix’s shares saw a marginal decrease of $3.76, which is less than one percent, finishing at $444.92.
