Netflix’s Ad-Supported Tier May Have Commercial-Free Content

It’s possible that not all of the content available on Netflix’s future ad-supported tier will feature advertisements. According to a Bloomberg report, Netflix may remove commercials from recent original movies and some kid’s shows.

According to the report, Netflix original movies may not first feature ads; instead, these would be added later. It’s too soon to say how long Netflix will screen a more recent film without ads, but as highlighted by Bloomberg, this choice may ease some of the worries that filmmakers may have about ads detracting from their work.

Similar to what Disney+ intends to do with its upcoming ad-supported tier, Netflix’s original children’s programming will apparently also receive the ad-free treatment. The same may be said for content created by independent studios. Bloomberg stated that some studios might not permit Netflix to the ad during specific episodes or movies that have been licensed to produce, but Netflix can make a choice to work around this by playing ads before or after the program.

Bloomberg claims that content licenses Netflix currently holds may not permit the screening of a particular movie or a movie containing ads. In order to get the rights, Netflix may have to pay anything between 10 and 15 per cent of the existing value of the deals.

Months after recording a drop in subscribers for the first time in more than ten years, Netflix announced that it would be introducing a new ad-supported tier. Since then, information on Netflix’s new strategy, which is scheduled to launch in early 2023, has been steadily leaking out.

The infrastructure for Netflix’s ad-supported tier will be provided by Microsoft, according to a July announcement. Later, co-CEO Ted Sarandos of Netflix stated that not all of the current Netflix content would be available at launch for the ad-supported tier. Code in the Netflix app suggests that you won’t be able to download any of the movies or TV series for offline watching either.
