In recent years, sharing one’s location with friends, family, and significant others has subtly become a necessary prerequisite to everyone. And now Instagram is bringing by launching Instagram Map, a new tool that enables users to find location-based content and share their most recent active location with others. The social network owned by Meta is also introducing reposts and expanding the global availability of its “Friends” page in Reels.
Following its 2016 replication of Snapchat’s fundamental Stories functionality, Instagram is now stealing yet another popular Snapchat feature with its new map tool. With this release of a new opt-in map function that allows users to share their location, Instagram is vying for the top spot with Apple’s Find My or Snapchat’s Snap Map with respect to users’ attention, a feature that is still one of the key features of the program and just topped 400 million monthly active users.
Users in the United States already have access to the feature. An interactive map displaying which friends are nearby and any location-based material they are publishing appears when you tap the “Map” circle on the Messages tab.
Meta stated in a blog post that “people have always come to Instagram to share what they’re up to and where they are.” It’s now simpler for you and your friends to remain in touch with the Instagram material you’re enjoying thanks to reposts, the map, and the “Friends” button in Reels.
Instagram Map does not offer real-time location updates; instead, users’ location is updated only when they launch the app. Additionally, Instagram Map does not allow location sharing by default. In contrast, Snap Map gives users the option to select whether their location is updated in real time or only when they use the app.
And it is notable for Instagram to allow users to share their whereabouts in real time through direct messages, or DMs. However, Instagram only allows users to reveal their position for a maximum of one hour, in contrast to Apple’s Find My and Snap Map, which let you to do so indefinitely.
Along with being a practical way to connect with pals, the program lets users discover local hot places that have been shared or interacted with by artists. For instance, a friend’s report from a local music festival will appear on the map. Additionally, you will be able to see the precise location of any new coffee shop that an influencer suggests.
According to Instagram, friends and buddies will find it simpler to plan and connect for get-togethers with the new map function. Users can also discover location-based content posted or interacted with by their favourite producers and friends. It will show up on the map, for instance, if your friend writes a tale while visiting a local music festival. In a similar vein, you can find a new restaurant in your city on Instagram Maps if a creator shares a reel about it.
Instagram states that you can use the map to discover location-based content regardless of whether you decide to disclose your location.
Instagram’s map provides strong safeguards to make sure the feature is not abused, even if location sharing has become a popular way to check in with friends or keep track of loved ones. By default, location sharing is disabled, and users’ locations are only updated when they use the application. You have a choice about who you share your location with and can choose not to share it with certain individuals or in particular locations.
Users may also post brief remarks, known as “Notes,” on the map for other people to see. Instagram Notes, which are currently the brief updates that show up at the top of your direct messaging stream, can now be posted on the map thanks to the introduction of Instagram Map.
With this new feature, Instagram is undoubtedly competing with Snapchat, but it also has the chance to win over users who like Zenly, a social map app that Snap purchased before shutting it down in 2023.
Beginning on Wednesday, the new map function will be available in the US; a wider global rollout is anticipated soon. The Instagram Map is located at the top of the user’s direct message inbox.
Given that Instagram was observed working on the map feature last year, the introduction is hardly shocking.
Everyone can still explore public postings and tagged locations on the map even if anyone aren’t revealing their personal location. Additionally, users can write messages for friends to view on the map.
Regarding the new “Reposts” feature, Instagram is emulating TikTok while also developing its own take on the well-liked “retweet” tool from Twitter (now X).
Instagram users can republish feed posts and public reels thanks to this capability. These reposts will be shown in a new “Reposts” page on their profile as well as in their friends’ feeds. According to Instagram, the new feature allows users to share their interests with others and gives creators a chance to connect with more people.
Users must hit the repost symbol in order to repost a video or post. By typing into the thinking bubble that displays on the screen and clicking save, users can also opt to include a note with the repost.
Instagram introduced the new “Friends” tab in Reels early this year in the US and is now expanding its availability worldwide. You can view public reels created, liked, commented on, and reposted by your friends on this tab.
Instagram is introducing the option to choose not to have content you’ve interacted with displayed in the friends tab for those who prefer to view and interact with content discreetly.
The tab allows users to conceal their likes, comments, and reposts. They also have the option to hide likes, comments, and reposts from particular users they follow.
The upgrade is part of a larger movement in which social media platforms are becoming more grounded in interpersonal relationships. Instagram is making an effort to overtake Snap Map after vying for Snapchat’s Stories in 2016. One of Snapchat’s primary engagement drivers, Snap Map just exceeded 400 million monthly active users.
