New Spotify AI Policy Targets Spam, Labels AI Tracks

Spotify just announced some changes to how it handles artificial intelligence music on its platform. The music streaming giant revealed that it has already removed over 75 million spammy tracks in the past year alone and is now rolling out new rules to better manage AI-generated content.

The company disclosed that total music payouts on Spotify have grown from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024, but these big payouts have attracted bad actors who use spam tactics like mass uploads, duplicates, and artificially short tracks to exploit the system. This explosive growth has made the platform a target for people trying to game the system with low-quality content designed purely to make money.

Spotify is launching a music spam filter, labelling AI tracks, and clarifying its rules around AI voice clones. The new policies aren’t about banning AI music entirely – instead, they’re about making sure everything is properly labelled and legitimate artists get fair treatment.

The numbers tell quite a story about AI music on the platform. According to Spotify, AI-generated tracks make up 28% of all uploads but only account for 0.5% of streams. This massive gap shows that while lots of AI music gets uploaded, people aren’t really listening to most of it. This suggests much of the AI content might be spam rather than genuine artistic expression.

What makes this particularly interesting is how Spotify is trying to balance welcoming legitimate AI music while cracking down on abuse. Spotify will welcome properly labelled AI music but reveals it removed 75 million spammy AI tracks over the last 12 months. The company isn’t anti-AI – they’re anti-spam and anti-deception.

For artists and music creators, these changes could be significant. The platform has been dealing with an flood of AI-generated content that was making it harder for genuine artists to get discovered and paid fairly. By cleaning up the spam and requiring proper labelling, Spotify is trying to create a more level playing field.

The timing of these changes makes sense given how quickly AI music tools have developed. What used to require expensive equipment and years of training can now be done with a laptop and some AI software. While this democratizes music creation in some ways, it also opens the door for people to flood platforms with low-effort content designed to exploit streaming pay-outs.

For regular Spotify users, these changes should mean a better listening experience. With less spam cluttering up search results and recommendations, it should be easier to find genuine music you actually want to hear. The labelling system will also help you make informed choices about whether you want to listen to AI-generated content.
