For PCs that are eligible, Microsoft has decided to heavily urge consumers to switch to Windows 11, version 25H2. The formal end of support date for Windows 10 has passed, yet a sizable portion of eligible customers have not yet upgraded, prompting this effort.
Even though December has only just begun some days ago, Microsoft is already preoccupied with the most recent reports of malfunctioning Windows, the fallout from Windows 10’s demise, and the sluggish adoption of its replacement. The Windows developer is now acting.
It was shocking to learn that up to 500 million customers might have PCs that could run Windows 11 but are opting not to upgrade. Microsoft is now pushing all PC owners, as well as Windows 11 users who haven’t received the most recent upgrades.
Microsoft has certified that all compatible systems may now download and install Windows 11 25H2, according to Neowin.
Users who have a PC that satisfies Windows 11’s system requirements can choose to upgrade to the 2025 feature update, regardless of whether they are using Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Even yet, there are still problems. The most recent Windows 11 update, according to Windows Latest, “may fail to install due to errors like 0x80070306.” However, if the update is applied, it will disrupt File Explorer’s dark mode and lead to issues with the Intel Arc GPU drivers.
While these problems “primarily affect certain enterprise systems,” Neowin notes that this “does not mean that personal computers are not affected.”
Microsoft claims that it is “working on a resolution” if you are impacted, but there is currently no deadline. This is an IT Support repair if you are a corporate user.
You’re waiting for the regular fixes to be released and installed if you’re a home user experiencing problems.
Microsoft claims that “you can check if the update is available by selecting Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates” in order to obtain the level-setting Windows 11 upgrade. The option to download and install Windows 11, version 25H2 will appear if your device is prepared for the update. But that only applies to PCs that qualify.
The decision by Microsoft to provide this new upgrade choice to all Windows 10 and Windows 11 customers is not the only recent development. Microsoft has also stated that it will use a “machine-learning” based method to automatically download Windows 11 25H2, according to Windows Latest.
“Machine learning-based intelligent rollout has begun for devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 24H2 that are not managed by IT departments,” according to Microsoft. “These devices will automatically receive the update to Windows 11, version 25H2 when they’re ready,” according to the progressive deployment.
This means that Microsoft is not simply “offering” it like a typical download and install feature update, according to Windows Latest. Rather, Windows Update will download version 25H2 quietly in the background while you choose whether to install it now or later. And machine learning is the foundation for that choice.
The Windows industry is now very busy, but it may soon become even busier. It is expected to be “on par with what we saw last month” on the final Patch Tuesday of 2025. A moderate number of CVEs will be fixed for the standard Windows 10 LTSC, Windows 11, and supported Server versions 2016-2025.
However, there is now an additional dimension for Windows 10 users who have not yet upgraded or who are unable to do so. Since Windows 10 support stopped two months ago, every CVE represents a vulnerability that won’t be fixed for any PCs that aren’t part of the ESU.
In a recent analyst call, Dell revealed that an astounding 500 million Windows 10 PC owners had the option to update to Windows 11 but have chosen not to, at least not yet. Due to a lack of the necessary security hardware, an additional 500 million cannot update.
“Microsoft is expected to begin rolling out the final Patch Tuesday update of 2025 for Windows 11 on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, which introduces several significant features, improvements, and bug fixes,” according to Windows Central.
A new Quick Machine Recovery default configuration will be part of those upgrades. “Microsoft is updating how it works, but the Quick Machine Recovery feature isn’t new to this update.”
More updates are good because this was lauded as a significant invention when it originally arrived, helping PCs recover from update failures among other things.
The bad news is that there may be a lot of upgrades this week that usually cause hangover problems after PC updates.
“With the addition of a new ‘Device details’ card, the Settings app is receiving numerous enhancements on the Home page. There will be another revamp of the “About” page. The Settings app now includes the Mobile Devices settings. Managing Windows 11’s virtualisation features is made simpler with Virtual Workspaces. The Control Panel is adding extra keyboard and mouse settings to the app, among other things.
Microsoft emphasises that depending only on antivirus software is insufficient without regular OS security patches in order to move customers to a more safe and contemporary operating system.
