Google’s YouTube has reportedly restricted several keywords tagged to hate terms, harassment, and misinformation on its video blogging platform (vlog). Users or advertisers have often used these harsh terms as keywords searching for content on YouTube to target ads.

The research discovered users who access these advertising platforms usually target ads via these hashtags — for instance, these keywords include, “white power” or “white lives matter” which are mostly used by the advertiser to place ads via the link that attracts more users, The Markup publications.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center agency that describes the situation as — Google is aiding advertisers, placing ads via the millions of optional tags tied to racial users tracking the trend — made available by Google itself.

Meanwhile, other commonly used phrases termed with hateful context include, the famously said “all lives matter” — this obliquely depicts the actual “black lives matter” or “white lives matter.” The agency highlighted these hate termed facts as “a racist response to the civil rights movement Black Lives Matter.”

Overtime, Google has reportedly blocked these keywords linked with Black Lives Matter to search for videos and channels — targeting their audience via these odd links, in line with The Markup’s research.

Google’s owned YouTube supported the media house’s research to ascertain their vlogging media blocked keywords related to social justice, hate, and racial terms, such as Black Excellence, All Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter, Civil Rights, White Power, and several others.

Conforming to the previous investigation of the social media giant, YouTube spokesman confirmed that Google has the policy to regulate such hate terms, harassment, or misinformation on its video-blogging platform. “Though no ads ever ran against this content on YouTube, because our multi-layered enforcement strategy worked during this investigation, we fully acknowledge that the terms identified are offensive and harmful and should not have been searchable.”

Google’s team has reportedly fixed these problems, whereby blocking access to such keywords contradictory to their policies. The aftermath of the investigation and patching up fixes by blocking these hate terms portrays how Google is proactive in regulating activities on its media via its policies.

As expected of a tech giant, YouTube revealed they have devised several means of restricting these violent terms or contents from spreading viral ads. The technology they develop is automated to remove video content and ads qualified to violate its policies.

In the wake of the pandemic, YouTube reportedly removed roughly 3 billion ads linked with bad keywords — these users also include the 867 million perpetrators blocked from hacking its technology that detects these awful terms. Nonetheless, Google does not publicly disclose how they run internal affairs — how they utilize their tools in moderating bad users, so the information will not be used against them.

Remember, YouTube has been responsible for moderating the activities on its platform — when “white supremacist” content was viral on its platform in 2019, the vlogging platform releases policies that blocked channels making money with these ill contents while they are also restricted from targeting ads.

YouTube Chief Executive, Susan Wojcicki highlights user-like content that consists of hate speeches mostly utilized by groups who believe their beliefs are superior compared to others — relating to religion, race, and gender / sexual orientation. She noted these beliefs are usually viral to “justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion.” — she shared her company’s opinion via YouTube’s blog.
