Nvidia Set To Unveil Next-Gen GPU Architecture In September

Multinational technology company, Nvidia is getting set to announce Lovelace, its next-gen GPU architecture. With Ampere being the current GPU architecture powering the Nvidia’s RTX 30-series GPUs, after the  first RTX cards debut of Turin in 2018. The software company is now expected in September detail its Lovelace GPU architecture at the GTC event, with Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang  at the company’s recent earnings call hinting at an announcement.

“We’ll get through this over the next few months and go into next year with our new architecture,” said Huang, while discussing a slowdown in gaming GPU demand. “I look forward to telling you more about it at GTC next month.”

The announcement of a new GPU architecture do not actually indicate that the RTX 40-series GPU’s will be seen immediately though. It would be recalled that Nvidia had unveiled its Ampere architecture for data centres, before launching its RTX 30-series cards for consumer’s months later, an indication that there has always been a slight delay between an architecture announce and consumer GPU launch. But the good news is that we won’t necessarily be waiting months with the RTX 20-series.

There are strong rumours suggesting that Nvidia will be working on RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 GPUs and one of such clear ones was the rumoured July release of the monster RTX 4090 that is primed to offer a big performance boost over existing RTX 3090 and even RTX 3090 Ti cards. Nvidia’s Chief Executive had also hinted that current-gen RTX 30-series GPUs will live alongside next-gen ones.

The RTX 30-series and the 40-series are very likely to co-exist on the major premise that Nvidia has built too many GPUs, with the company currently being forced to adjust retail pricing as a result of excess inventory, and the RTX 30-series cards seen appearing recently at MSRP, following years of prices being hiked 2-3x by resellers.

The crash in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has in no small way affected the demand for GPU, with the excess inventory making it more difficult to predict when Nvidia is likely to actually put its RTX 40-series cards on shelves.

The GTC 2022 conference by Nvidia is expected to run between September 19th to 22nd, with CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote set for September 20th at 8AM PT / 11AM ET.

“I look forward to next month’s GTC conference, where we will share new advances of RTX reinventing 3D graphics in gaming, AI’s continuing breakthroughs, and building the metaverse, the next evolution of the Internet,” says Huang.
