A new move from Google to empower Nigerian Developers, as it has revealed a new initiative. Google says it is training 1,000 Nigerian developers in generative artificial intelligence (AI) skills through its new initiative, on Build with AI.

The program’s goal is to give participants the know-how to actively create creative, locally applicable, and internationally competitive solutions.

The program is in collaboration with GOMYCODE, a technology education and training organisation that specialises in giving people the digital skills that employers are desiring and looking for their businesses.

In a statement, John Kimani, Google’s Head of Developer Ecosystem in Sub-Saharan Africa, he says the action is a big and bold step towards making Nigeria more involved in the global AI economy.

Nigeria is experiencing a technological renaissance which is driven by a dynamic developer community that is ready and keen to address by solving the problems in their environment.

He also stated that the partnership with GOMYCODE is all about equipping this community with the knowledge and resources they need to create the future, not just about providing training.

The project, according to Kimani, comes at an important time in which the sectors in Nigeria and Africa are increasingly rely on technology use to solve urgent and immediate problems to drive economic expansion. The program seeks to bridge the skill-gap between not developed ability and specialist who have knowledge needed in the AI era by providing access to cutting-edge AI tools like Gemini and a curriculum supervised by Google professonals.

In order to place Nigerian developers at the front of Africa’s digital revolution, he continued that the training will concentrate on creating essential solutions in industries like fintech, healthtech, agritech and others.

The practical method for the training according to GOMYCODE is a network of hacker spaces which will be used to offer the 11-week curriculum, which will also combine with the in-person instruction with guided and accompanied with a practical lab work.

Developers can immediately apply what they have learnt to the real-world projects and thanks to this unique training technique, which guarantees that the training is both practical and accessible, according to Kimani.

Also in addition, Babatunde Olaifa, GOMYCODE’s Country Director, says that the organisation would supply the necessary infrastructure and local knowledge to support the growth of Nigerian technology talent.

“We are fostering an atmosphere that encourages innovation, and we look forward to seeing the solutions that come from this program created by Nigerians, for Nigeria and the world.”

Olaifa went on to say that the collaboration will enable GOMYCODE to provide Nigerian developers with access to world-class curriculum and technology.

The “Build with AI” program is now accepting applications from developers around the country, Nigeria, who are interested can apply through this link bit.ly/BwAIDevTraining and top participants at the end will showcase their AI-powered solutions to Google and industry leaders and experts during a demo day at the end of the program.
