The Nintendo Switch which was first announced back in October 2016 and launched in the first quarter of 2017 seems to be doing pretty well at the moment with respect to sales.  The mobile gaming console has beat its forerunner,  Wii. Nintendo sold 19.7M Switch consoles in the quarter ending June 30, with net sales of $1.513B, up 9% YoY, and profit of $394.6M, up 42% YoY. As good as the numbers look though, the company sold 1.88 million Switch consoles last quarter compared to the 2.93 million and 7.23 million sales reported in its previous two quarters. This drop is because its no longer the holidays among other factors.

This is partly due to the fact that it got some exclusive gaming content including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Nintendo had set a target of 20 million consoles between April 2018 and March 2019 which means they have to do much more in order to hit the target even though some other exclusives like the Super Smash Bros and Pokemon Go are in the works. The hope would be that as these games are launched closer to the holiday period, sales will be on the rise.

Bloomberg reports that the company cited “especially good growth” in digital sales through the Switch’s eShop, which has a higher profit margin than cartridges sold in stores. Digital sales jumped by 68 percent from a year ago to 18.5 billion yen. They accounted for 11 percent of total revenue, double the ratio in December 2016, before the Switch went on sale.
